Kennel Cough

My old lab has come down with kennel Cough. Vet gave him a course of antibiotics. He is coughing a lot, spitting out gunk and looking miserable. There is an epidemic of it in our area. Who out there has experience of this?I have another lab, I suppose he will get it too. Their Intrac ran out in October.

It sounds dreadfull when they have it...and it horrible listening to them hacking and choaking.....U could try baby benyln(sp) to soothe the throat from the constant hacking.
The vets used to dispense benyln with coedine...so atleast it helped them sleep....I think my mams vets does lincus and coedine.
They will also go off their food and vomit in really bad cases.....soft feed is always best to offer.

Some vets dont stock any medicine at all,(ours don't) and rarely give antibiotics (ours don't either) unless really bad.
Generally once they have had a really bad bout...the next bout is not a severe if at all.

It does spread like wild fire.....generally from realted walk destinations as the infected

It lasts about 6 days

One of our dogs came from a rescue, and came out with what was put down to kennel cough/upper respiratory infection. He was given a course of antibiotics that didn't seem to have any effect, the coughing got worse and he ended up with a raging temperature. He was taken back to the vets as an emergency on a Sunday, and was given an antibiotic injection. This helped a LOT, and we took him back a week later. He was given another injection, and he improved again. The week after he was given a third antibiotic injection. He cleared up completely soon after that.

Coming from that environment...he probabely had a seere case of it

The worst cases we see are those from rescue kennels....some of the conditionds are rancid in those places, cold wet bedding, freezing cold drafty kennels, all sorts of infectious viruses passing from one dog to the next on a repeat cycle, young puppies...who stand no chance

A dogs immuntity will be taxed to the peak in this type of environment.

Get the homeopathic nosode. My vet uses it and reckons it's the only thing that works. Hard to find a vet that uses alternative remedies as well mind you. It definately worked for mine, none of them got it when there was an outbreak in kennels.
