Are your dogs vaccinated for kennel cough? Seems there is quite a lot around at the moment. Our two do not have it, they do not go to kennels and the jrt went mental when they gave it to him and now has to be muzzled when we go to the now ( big dog was not bothered by it but seems silly to just do one of them)

I waited a hour with Ruby Springer at the vets surgery about two years ago, and a couple of days later, she started to cough. Took her back to the vet and, when I got to the entrance, there was notice stating that if your dog was coughing, leave it in the car, come to reception, and a vet would come to the car! Honestly reckon she must have picked it up from the vets' waiting room days earlier! Anyway, we only had five dogs back then:eek: and, if I remember correctly, only one other dog caught the cough too. Neither were ill, but Ruby's cough hung on for several weeks. Several months later, one of my other dogs started coughing and all five developed kennel cough. Then, a year or so ago (by this time we had six dogs!) - yup - three of them caught kennel cough including our puppy and good old Ruby Springer! Pup only coughed for a day or two then stopped, but Ruby's cough hung on for ages.....vet said not to worry. About a year ago, I was "reunited" with a former boyfriend (oh, that sounds so TEENAGE and we're both in our mid-fifties!!!) and we subsequently married. Ruby was still coughing intermitently at this stage and one of OH's two dogs (yes, we now have eight dogs!) also started coughing, so being a homeopath, he treated both his dogs homeopathically - coughing dog stopped coughing and the other never coughed once. Several months on, and Ruby would still cough occasionally, particularly when she became excited so OH dosed her homeopathically, too and, believe it or not, several months on and she hasn't coughed since!

If any of my dogs develop kennel cough again, I know which route I'm going to choose! Please don't ask me what he used because it's late at night and OH is tucked up in bed!

I don't, there are various strains of it so if you come up against a dog with a different strain than your dog was vaccinated against, then they are going to get it. If you intend to put him in kennels then they will insist on it.

Kennel cough is a doggy cold, so as Chestnutty Mare has said you only get the vaccine for one or two strains of it. Benlyne is great for the cough (it was originally formulated for horses!!) and keep fluids up, treat your dog as you would any one with a cold.

I am in Guernsey so i guess it passes round the island quite quickly.

I am glad it is really just a doggy cold, hopefully the dogs dont develop "man Flu"

I do vaccinate my old girl against it because being a Cavi and having heart problems and doing a lot of snorting anyway it's really something she could do without so I figure if she can be protected against the worst strains and it really doesn't bother her having the vaccine then why not? Whilst some strains are quite mild and don't make the dog that ill there are some that cause horrible mucoid discharge from the nose and make the dog feel pretty rotten.
