Hi there, i have a spaniel who was diagnosed with kennel cough a couple of weeks ago. The cough has never been a major issue , we just had a bit of phlegm throwing up and coughing for a couple of days. She was put on amoxycare the first week. After a week i noticed her breathing was noisy and she was having to work at breathing so took her back to vets. She was put on oxycare this time as her chest was noisy. This was tuesday.
My question is should i be seeing an improvement by now? Although her breathing isnt as noisy , she is still having to work at it. I also realised today she seems to be looking thinner. She isnt really off her food and is still pretty lively.
She was diagnosed with a low grade murmour (sp?) as a pup but its never bothered her. Should i now be asking the vets to consider its not just kennel cough going on here? Not one single dog, (including my other dog) that had contact with her before the cough started , have developed it

Oxytet (oxycare) is the drug to use anyway, along with Bi Solvin powder to "open up her tubes" ..horse talk..but consider lungworm as the fact it has`nt spread is suspicious .

Just a general musing and NOT an attack, but for the sake of £16.00 why are your dogs not vaccinated against KC?

The vaccine is not very effective and the vaccine company datasheet advises against giving the vaccine if the dog may come into contact with anyone or any dog that is imunocompromised.
(Actually as they want the money it advises that "The immunocompromised avoid contact with the vaccine or vaccinated animals for six weeks") Immunocompromised includes infants, elderly, pregnant and people with autoimmune diseases or on chemotherapy.

Dogs can develop a cough after being given the vaccine too.

Isnt it?? do you know a lot of dogs that have got it after being vaccinated!? - sorry am just interested this isnt an attack as previously mentioned. we are due to vac a puppy next weekend. we already have a gsd vcc'd againsted and have never know any of our dogs to get it after.

Thanks!

they can get it after but its not common and it would be less severe. i dont vaccinate mine against it, it not common to have complications.
i would be asking the vets to consider other options possibly lung worm or infection

Yes I do know dogs that have got Bordatella after being vaccinated as well as dogs that have caught it at the vets. The normal booster includes a KC component - Parainfluenza - so the BB part of the KC vaccine is the treatable bacterial kind.

Can't do quotes on my phone but kierleymiss my dogs have their yearly boosters just not the nasal one. The vet we saw this week said the amoxycare should have worked and that it must be an atypical kennel cough she has. In 9 years she has only had kennel cough once before and it was a version with no cough just sneezing. I was going to ask about lungworms when I spoke to them next. Up until this year I used the flea stuff that protects against it but this year the ticks were so awful I changed to a flea and tick one .

i also know many who have contracted it despite the vaccine - i compete with hundreds of dogs at agility shows throughout the country and dont get my dogs done. Its pointless. I got my first dog done 15 years ago and he still contracted it. Waste of money. The kennels I use when we go away (very rarely) are trials people and of the same opinion.

Just a quick "apology" to the OP who I apparently "had a go at" even though I quite clearly stated that it WAS NOT an attack just a general musing, then asked further questions as I am GENUINELY interested as we are due to Vacc..............

Like you NsayN, I used to go to loads of shows, breed and agility and didn't have my dogs vaccinated, I think we had maybe one mild dose of KC and that was it. I have had Evie and Freya done this year, purely because my daughters dog is an official "vets dog", and not suprisingly, picked up a mild form of kc. As he visits us fairly regularly I decided it might be sensible to have them done as Freya is only a puppy. I don't suppose I will bother in future years though.

not sure if you ever came across this, but what does annoy me are the people who take dogs to these events that are or have been recently coughing  despite clear KC rules!

Will ring the vets in the morning to ask but in the meantime does anyone know how long advocate takes to kill the lungworms ? Can't find it on the Internet anywhere.

According to the manufacturers it treats by killing but you need the stuff every month to keep killing reinfections. She is being treated for an infection at the moment

I thought you needed Panacur to rid (can't remember dose, but seem to recall it had to be given daily for 2 weeks or something to be affective) and Advocate only reduce re-infestation.

The last meeting i went to they said 2 doses of advocate were necessary to ensure no lungworm. Apparently some vets were only doing routine ops after 2 doses were administered to prevent risk of haemaorrhage from surgery if lungworm present.

Panacur daily for 21 days

Helpful science bit from elsewhere:

A randomized, blinded, controlled multicentre field trial study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of imidacloprid 10%/moxidectin 2.5% spot-on solution and fenbendazole in treating dogs naturally infected with Angiostrongylus vasorum. Dogs were randomly treated either with a single dose of 0.1 ml/kg bodyweight of imidacloprid 10%/moxidectin 2.5% spot-on solution or with 25 mg/kg bodyweight fenbendazole per os for 20 days. The study period was 42 days with dogs being examined on days 0, 7 and 42. The primary efficacy parameter was the presence of L1 larvae in faecal samples evaluated by a Baermann test from three consecutive days. Thoracic radiographs performed on each visit were being taken as a paraclinical parameter to support the results of the Baermann test. Twenty-seven dogs in the imidacloprid/moxidectin group and 23 dogs in the fenbendazole group completed the study according to protocol. The efficacies of the two treatment protocols were 85.2% (imidacloprid/moxidectin) and 91.3% (fenbendazole) with no significant difference between treatment groups. On radiographic evaluation pulmonary parenchyma showed similar improvement in each group. No serious adverse effects to treatment were recorded:

2 doses a month apart? And panacur as in the granules? My vet only gave me one pipette of advocate

Yes 2 doses a month apart. We always dispense granules but i presume you could do liquid suspension (might be more expensive and you might find your dosing large quantities). Ask your vet to do an inhouse baermanns test, we have diagnosed quite a few cases from this.

xx
