We are expecting our first and possible only litter.
I was going to register with the KC at extortionate cost of £70 for a Kennel name so we could give all the pups the same prefix but we can't have the name we wanted and can't think of anything else which is meaningful to us.
What are people's thoughts on Kennel names? Do you think it is necessary? Is there any disadvantage in not having one apart from the obvious and that you can't register your litter on line?
Thanks for any help.

I would try and get one if you can, just my opinion though... But then to be honest if it is your only litter, it does seem a little pointless...sorry to contradict myself.

What was the name you couldn't have. What is your breed of dog?

If you're going to stay small, then I don't think you need to.
It helps with uniformity, i.e everybody can say, oh, his name is Suchandsuch Joebloggs, he is from the Suchandsuch 'j' litter.
Some people when they go larger re-register the name, i.e if he was just Joebloggs, apply to have him re-named Suchandsuch Joebloggs.

Just be careful, I have a friend who let the KC decide on registered names, with no prefix, because one of his suggested name was in a particular vein, they all came back as Tom Cruise films. I [****] you not.

I wouldnt bother if you are probably only going to breed one litter, it really doesnt seem worth the expense!

Would agree with another poster who said never go with the KC recommendations for names, they are quite often rubbish

Thanks for the help. The name we wanted was Ravensdale...my hubby has been playing with anagrams!
She is a German wire haired pointer and pups will be going to pet and working homes, not sure about showing as we don't but both our's and the stud have good showing bloodlines so I guess someone might want to.
LOL at the Tom Cruise films, we were thinking of soft drinks.

If its going to be your only litter I really wouldn't bother registering an affix. You could just register all the pups with names on a similar theme.

i thought the same as you 'dizzykizzy' i would like to put my bitch in pup in the near future and a looked into getting a KC name...even qued an hr at crufts this year and then i couldnt have the names i chosen so ive gotta rethink...yeah it £70 to get the name and then youve gotta pay yearly to keep it wheather you breed dogs or any other animal
i think its another way the KC getting money out of us...But at least you could always trace the pups in later life esp if theyre going into working homes
good luck if you decide to register
