Anyone know of a good any distributers of wooden Kennels?

I am looking for a large wooden kennel to provide shelter for a Rhodesian Ridgeback (although only still a pup at mo but will need to accommodate fully grown beast) AND a whippet x collie?

I have found this one...

The large is 1.6m x 0.9m x 0.9m (roughly 5ft x 3ft x 3ft) for £220!!

Anyone else know of any similar products?

Thankies

Looks horribly dark......

[/ QUOTE ]Oh good point.... I'm sure OH could put a little light in....

Hmmm the trouble is there really isn't anything big enough that I can find... unless we go for a shed.. but I just don't think that will be as cosy...

With this on it has a wind panel on the inside of the door which can be removed... which will allow more light... we'll obv have the back towards the wind direction anyways

KJJ, why not go for a shed and furnish it?

I'm not being funny either... a decent shed with windows, an old sofa, a rug on the floor, it would be perfect for a couple of pooches!

And probably cheaper.... even when furnished!

Plus, it's way easier to clean out... cos not being funny... but a puppy might poo in the back of that... and you don't wanna be trying to get poop out the back of a dog kennel!

[/ QUOTE ]I agree it would probably be cheaper.. HOWEVER.... space is an issue really... we'd like the shelter down by the house for the dogs rather than at the top of the garden (where a shed would have to go) ... plus I'm not sure that a shed would be as warm with the door open... unless we cut a hole in the door/side?!

[/ QUOTE ]Well this kennel has a removeable roof so can be taken off and cleaned out with ease.

Hmmm

Also the other issue with the furnishing... the dogs aren't allowed on furniture in the house.... so we won't want to encourage them to climb onto a sofa in the shed... trouble is if we then only put in their beds the shed will become IMO less warm than if it had a sofa?!?

Oh decisions?!?

My YO went to B and Q and bought the cheapest kids playhouse. cost them £80 (dont quote me on that).

She made a little run for it, it has wall to wall carpet, curtains, a doggy sofa, "family" pictures on the wall and even a hanging basket!
grin.gif
Worked out a LOT cheaper and easy to clean etc because of the size!

[/ QUOTE ]LMAO!! Oh that is just wrong!!!

I did think of the playhouse option... however the cheapest I could find was £180...

Well OH seems to think the above kennel is the one to go for as he really doesn't want another shed in the garden...

Plus if I get the playhouse the 5yr old daughter may get jealous and want one!!

[/ QUOTE ]Right OH has agreed that a shed down the side of the house might be an option!! Hehe... so will have seen this...

Which isn't too tall.. which was my concern re- the heat.. it's 8ft x 3ft x 4.5ft high.. and is £160 .. most sheds of a reasonable size seem to start at £165 from what I have seen.... so this may be the one...

We bought a shed from B and Q which was only £80 or so. I would leave the single door hinged and then make a dog hole gor them to go in, alot cheaper than the funny box above.

What my uncle done for the 2 gun dogs was to divide his shed into 2, one half for the dogs, one half for all his crap! Then he put in a bed big enough for both of them with blankets then he cut a hole that they could fit through and then attached a run to the outside so they had the run outside but a really good shelter as well. If you know what I mean?!!! Sorry, bad at explaining things!

[/ QUOTE ]Yup that makes sense.

Have been to B&Q and chosen an 8ft x 6ft shed so we have the option to build a run like you say... we are actually planning to place a partition in so that I can store horsey stuff too!!!!

I agree with DM. Sheds are great for dogs! Lots of light and just cut out an opening in the side so that the dogs can get in and out. I had my dogs in a shed for a while before we had their kennels built - I decked it out with a bale of hay so it was always warm for them.......no sofa's or carpet for my dogs I'm afraid LOL!!

We had an old one the cats used in the summer house (aka the cat's kennel...) - it was smaller, stinkier and fabric not leather, so it was the animals sofa (the dog often shared it with my mum if she couldn't sleep at night)

The cats have now realised that leather sofas are NOT cat sofas, and although will sleep on everything else, don't even touch the sofas!

We think the dogs will recognise it as a sofa cos we see a sofa and know it's a sofa... if the dogs see it, however, they know it's a dog bed... and that the sofas in the house are human beds!

If you never sit on their sofa, and make it clear anything in the house is NOT for sitting on, then they won't realise they're the same things!!!

Where do you live?

We are in Darlington and we had one made by a garden furniture shop for £65, I can't remember what size it is exactly but my husband (6'6''), alaskan malamute (45kg) and fat ginger cat can all get in it together! Why I'm not sure but they do...

They make them to order and we are sooooo pleased with it.

IMO the best (and cheapest ) option is to sit dodwn and think about what you really want, then build it yourselves!
You will never find exactly what you want in a pet shop,or if you do it will be too small. The timber will be pretty cheap from a builders yard and they will be able to advise you on what to treat wood with ect.
