I’ve bought a secondhand K&M pony club saddle to tide my daughters pony over until she can go for her fitting in the new year. Saddler advised that she thought the shape might suit, and that even if it didn’t become her saddle it could be a good stopgap.

But the gullet (as in the whole length of it) is SO narrow. I can’t see how any pony could be comfortable in it! It’s two of my fingers wide.

It currently has a blue bar in and is way too narrow for the pony anyway - but will the whole gullet widen when the new bar goes in and the saddle itself widens? I’m really surprised by it!

Thanks

Channel, and no, it won't widen when you put in a wider headplate. It's rare for a spine to get wider even in young ridden horses, so the channel needs to be wide enough full stop, it's not the part of the saddle that should ever need to be changed when a horse changes shape. The headplate usually slightly changes the shape of the tree, not the panel attachment (which is what forms the channel), through the middle.
