Hi

I am thinking of popping to a couple of the Kent Based Horse Dealers to try and find a nice novice horse, there are a few that I know have good reputations and thinking of visiting:-

Kent Horse Producers
Duckhurst Farm
SE Horses

I am a real novice at Horse Purchasing and not the kind of buyer who can just pass horses on if they turn out not to be as described as I get so attached so if anyone has any info re the above Traders good or bad that would be really great - please PM me if you prefers.

when I was looking I liked some of the horses from kent horse producers but I found them really rather expensive for what they were. As with buying a horse from anywhere just keep your eyes open and get your own vet. Also really good to have someone go along with you - perhaps your instructor, to help ask questions that might go out of your head and to offer their own opinion on the suitability of the horse for you. If you like a horse, then I would def recommend sleeping on it to let your mind settle, then visit and ride the horse again.
Good luck in your search, it is stressful, but so worth it when you find yourself a great horse!
 
If you are looking for a horse good for a novice then I wouldn't go to any of them. If you want a green horse then yes. Take someone knowledgable with you and make sure you have a lot of money as they are not cheap.
 
For a horse for a novice, I would suggest buying from a 'real home' - if you know what I mean. You are more likely to get a genuinely suitable horse. You will still need to keep your wits about you, have vetting etc because not all advertised horses are as they seem.

I realise this may take longer, but you will be keeping your horse for a long time (hopefully) so you want to get it right.

Hmmmmm, funny how you picked just those 3 out of all the dealers in Kent.....

What about Prestwood farm? They have a good rep.

A bit harsh I think... I don't think anyone can say that they DO NOT have good horses for novices...They are dealers - they change their stock all the time and different horses of all ages and abilities are going through their yards every week! We have experience with all 3 and I would def say go and have a look - If you don't like what they have thats fine and I'm sure they would all be most polite and wish you luck finding the horse that you are looking for. You never know why horses end up in yards like that, you might just find exactly what you are looking for. We bought a young Irish horse from Kent Horse Producers a few years ago, jumped the age classes with her and she jumped a few 1.30m's.... We sold her to a lady in Canada last year for more than £30k !! We are also now competing a horse bought from Duckhurst farm a few months ago...In the last 3 shows he has been to he has either been placed or jumped double clears in every class he's been in at fox level. He was jumping novice and discovery when we got him!

If ANY dealer ( or private person for that matter ) has something that you like the look of, don't be put off by others slating them - maybe they just bought a horse that was not suitable for them ?!?
 
Thanks all - I have made a decision now and had a chat to my instructor who is going to help me find a nice partner and I am in no rush as would rather find the right one who can be a life long friend.

As an aside: That chestnut gelding on Duckhurst's site looks brilliant. If only I could have a whole yard full.

lol shouldnt laugh no way avoid they are all connected and i can tell you far worse soon also

agree.

I'm sure they do sell the nice horses to their friends and fellow dealers! Perhaps not all the horses they sell are bad but they aren't stupid and would sell a 3 legged donkey to a blind man if they thought they could get away with it!!

What ever horse you like, wherever you get it from, always, always get it vetted by your own vet. A tough lesson I learnt! Good luck finding your horse :)
