I am currently working on getting my extremely flat footed, extremely thin soled TB sound again & need some good quality hoof & heel in order to do this.

I have heard good things about Keratex hoof hardener & also the Pro Hoof supplement, as well of course addressing my lads diet; can anyone recommend whether either of these things are good/bad/worth the cash etc? Thankyou x

I use keratex on my tb just around the nail holes as its the only thing that keeps his shoes on the full 5 weeks. I used this along with a sole hardener that my vets make. My boy had his shoes off for about 6 months after an op which left his feet knackered. I found a great remedial farrier that works for a local vet & he tried a few different types of shoes to allow foot growth. And I used 365 complete from equine answers online as it had all the supplements in the farriers supplement with extra.

I use pro hoof with my mare with similar problems. Too soon to tell whether it is working, but the company who make it provide excellent customer service.

I haven't used keratex. My vet was not keen on using topical treatments but suggested naf rock hard if I wanted one. As it is I had a virtually full tin of Kevin Bacon which my farrier recommended so I'm using that.

I use Pro Hoof supplement for my unshod TB, however I would not use Keratex - it contains formaldehyde - not something I would ever want to put on my horses feet.

I use the hoof hardener when cracking is really bad in the wet fields. In this situation the foot doesn't break off as nature intended (especially white ones). I paint from just below coronet to just above the crack on affected foot. Farrier hates it though as it makes feet tough to trim. Wouldn't worry about the formaldehyde tbh was used for years as a preservative in schools and never did us any harm!

Yay to pro hoof, nay to Keratex. As said above, it contains formaldehyde which some studies show can negatively affect bone density. Wouldn't use it on myself and won't use it on the horses ;).

Another Yay to pro hoof and nay to keratex...

Have used keratex in the past, cant say it made a lot of difference and knowing what it is made from made me stop using it altogether.

In your situation the heeling will happen from the inside. Start with the pro-hoof added to the diet, support with boots and pads add a little patience and you'll get there I promise!!
