I was wondering, my mare is unshod and I put keratex hoof hardeneer on her feet about once a week, are you supposed to put it on the soles too or just the hoof?

She has Effol on a couple of times too, feet are fab Im just wondering if I should be doing her soles really with the Keratex

The Keratex hoof hardener should only be put on the bottom third of the outside of the hoof, and can be put on the soles but only around the edges. Never on or near the frog. It is great stuff for unshod feet.

As Marius_Mum said take care not to get it on the frogs.

IMHO using the Effol as well is a bit counter productive as that will soften the horn -Kerratex alone would be better.

Thank you! There is a girl i know who puts it all over her horses feet and I thought it was wrong!
Well I put the Keratex on once a week but her hooves were getting a bit brittle and cracked, since using the effol that has gone and they are perfect.

Wth my barefoot horse, under the guidance of an Equine Podiatrist, I ONLY use it on the sole (not the frog), and not the wall, which should be kept supple. Also, I have only been directed to use it now that all the false sole has exfoliated, because when you first go barefoot, there is a period when the false sole needs to come off, and Keratex just binds it on so it's not helpful.

Keratex is really more helpful to shod horses that lose their shoes easily as it stabilises the wall around the nail holes.
