As title, my cousins pony has a suspected keratoma, the farrier was shown it yesterday and is contacting the vet today. xrays are the next logical step.

this pony had hoof xrays taken 7 weeks ago due to being sore on feet, the xrays revealed she only has 3mm of sole so on vets/farriers advice owner went ahead and natural balance shoes were put on. I was asked to take rug off in field on monday and the pony was lame so I bought her in, the only abnormal thing I could see was a lump on the front of the hoof, have never seen any thing like this before. farrier came yesterday and that is where we are now.

is it likely that the keratoma was not there 7 weeks ago? there was no lump then, or should it have been visible on the xray. will be looking at xrays later (love them) and we will go fro there.

just wanted to hear opinions and experiences with them

A horse at my old yard had one. When he was vetted X-rays were taken and it wasn't there then. It must have been approx a year later that he was re x-rayed and it was there. Anyway, he was operated on and after a long recovery (mainly due to waiting for the removed section of hoof to grow out) he went back to being in full work. :)

thanx for reply, I have seen that treatment is quite drastic but results are usually good, this mare does not work for various reasons but obviously they need to be pain free even if an ornament.
just seems such a short time from clear xrays to lump being visible

My lad had two keratomas successfully removed last year but they only showed up on a CT scan, the X-rays looked clear. His hoof was perfectly normal otherwise with no bulging of the outer wall but then again he has mahoooosive feet so the keratoma would have had to be the size of an egg to produce this.

The surgery is very invasive to the hoof but very effective and the vets will make sure they get a clear margain around the tumour to prevent re growth. Chances of getting another, following surgery, is the same as any other horse.

If I can fathom out how to post piccies, I'll post a pic of my lad's foot post surgery. It is rather dramatic but not gory as there was hoof re growth from the inside out.

Timescales - my boy had surgery in May 2013 (resected halfway up his hoof and all the way to bone). Completely grown out by October 2013.

Ah that is very interesting regarding the CT scan being needed thank you and pics would be great

I've no idea if this piccie has worked as I'm on my phone - it looks ok on here lol.

Anyway, if it has worked, this was taken approx seven weeks post surgery and the first time he was shod again afterwards.

The black stuff inside the hole is actually new hoof growing from the inside out. Found this quite amazing as he has white feet!! He had a silicone plug in the hole up to this point to protect the foot but this was removed and stayed out.

He also had full bar shoes on for ages, to support the hoof but these didn't cause any problems at all.

That's very interesting deb_l222 thanks for sharing it.
I've only ever read about keratomas so never had experience of dealing with the problem.
Good luck twiggy2 I'm sending healing (((vibes))) your way x
