Diva had her keratoma removed today, so i thought i’d share the photos!

i dropped her off at 8:30, went to the office to sign forms etc, went back around to say bye to her and he’d already taken her in to start! so rather than drive the hour each way i decided to wait - it took almost exactly an hour! i’m glad i waited, as it would’ve taken me that long to get home; id have been setting off as soon as id pulled up haha.

i cannot believe the size of it! i’m not surprised she was lame the poor thing.

1st photo - after using the dremmel, you can see the shape of it before he started removing it
2nd photo - mid removal
3rd photo - straight after being removed
4th photo - once it was taken home and cleaned😂

really cool to be able to keep it, one side is completely hard whilst the other side is soft and squishy, where it would’ve been attached to the inside of her foot. it really does just look like a chunk of wood you’d find in a bale of shavings!

Isn’t medicine fascinating!!!

Heres crossing everything for a smooth recovery ❤️‍🩹
she’s bandaged up to her knee, and of course she’s already been chewing the gamgee that’s sticking out at the top🙈 i think as long as she keeps it on, we’ll be okay! she’s got a proper moon boot on, 1 foot is that of a 13.2 and the other is a great big shire hoof🤣

Awww god love her!!! ♥️

Omg 😧 how was it diagnosed? Could it be seen from the outside or did it need a scan?

Hope she has a speedy recovery and is a good patient for you!

Great photos showing the process of removal. Could it be seen on an xray being so dense?

Swift healing vibes sent for a smooth recovery 🤞

yes showed up on x-ray, she went in for a full lameness workup - once this foot was blocked, she also went lame on the right fore which showed damage to her collateral ligament🙈😩

she had a crack in her hoof that was very reluctant to grow out, originally barefoot but 2 farriers & the vet said she’d need shoes for it to grow out - bit of a catch 22, not sure if the crack caused the keratoma, if the keratoma stopped the crack filling in, or both!

Fascinating photos, thanks for sharing them. A friend of mine had a keratoma removed from her horse a few years ago, he must have been about 18 at the time. He recovered really well from the op and hes still going under saddle. I think hes about 23 now. Hope Diva recovers as well

thankyou for the well wishes and a positive story! i know there’s a lot that could go wrong, but i think im more stressed about the collateral ligament than the keratoma - possibly because i don’t really have to do anything for the keratoma, except hope it all heals as it should!😂

for your viewing pleasure! first bandage change, vet was very happy with it and said it’s bleeding less than expected, she was very patient all things considered - not helped by princess lily hanging over the wall watching, because i hadn’t done and said hello to her before going in with diva😂

How is recovery going @dottylottie? My boy is in Glasgow equine centre having had his Keratoma removed last week, and then I was called today to say he’s had to take a little bit more off 😭 so really need to see these positive vibes and stories where I can. He’s estimating 8 months box rest, is that the same for you?

Hope you’re both coping well!

sorry i missed this reply! hope everything is going well for your boy!

Diva had hers removed on the 27th june, and the vet came out yesterday and said we can stop bandaging next week - he said it’s possibly the best one he’s had! from next week we’re going to just pack a little bit of gauze in the wound and duct tape it to her hoof, he said even that isn’t strictly necessary but airing on the side of caution.

rehab wise it’s hard to say for us, as she’s on box rest for a collateral ligament injury too. she escaped the other day from her small pen and let herself into the arena, had a proper hooley, but he did say he’s not overly concerned about that now in terms of the keratoma. had we not been box resting for the ligament, i’d be sticking a poultice boot on giving her some sedalin and chucking her out for a couple of hours! but i’m not sure that’s what the vet would prefer haha.

My horse had a keratoma op in November 2020. He was on 'box rest' (he had in hand walking and bit of arena turnout daily once he had a shoe and hospital plate on) for 3 months while the defect keratinised.

Hope your boy is recovering well so far!

5 weeks post removal tomorrow, so thought i’d post a side by side of how much it’s grown out! she’s having her feet done for the first time on the 4th so will be exciting to see how much further down it is - when the vet said 4-5 months for it to grow out i was very skeptical, but seeing how much it’s grown out already has me hopeful! her feet grown quite quickly anyway, but she’s on biotin atm too, not sure if it’s actually making a difference but it makes me feel like i’m helping😂
