Thinking about pros and cons of getting a 3.5 ton wagon or a trailer.

Need to travel one 16.1 and one 14.2, but worried about weight limits with the horses in!

Thinking that an LPG 4x4 would be more cost effective than wagon + small car?

What is the best car for pulling a trailer, and whats the best lightest trailer?

Sorry for all Qs!!

Hi my friend tows a 505 with her sportage, its ok with one in aslong as its a flat run and no major hills, but would probably struggle with 2. I use a Suzuku Grand Vitara 2ltr diesel tow a richardson lightweight trailer with a big fat cob and am very happy with it, not sure i would try it with 2 though.

I use a Kia Sorento and it pulls my bateson deauville with 2 big 15.2 hh welsh Sec D cobs with no probs. I also find it cheaper to run than my hubbys peugeot 307 AND its got heated seats which are great in cold weather

Sorentos are not a bad price and you get a lot of car for your money

Sadly mine does not tow nicely.... its kind of jerky.... and this is being looked at by Kia..... Its had a new transfer box, as they thought it was this, but it wasnt...... good job it was a warrentee job

the sportage has a towing limit of 1600kg and it's kerb weight is only 1500kg. an empty IW505 weighs 1000kg so wouldn't leave you enough for one horse, only a pony. and that's if you disregard the EU law which says the car should be capable of towing the MAM of the trailer which is 2340kg for the IW505.

the grand vitara is hardly a suitable towing vehicle either - it's kerb weight is even less than the sportage and it's max towing weight wouldn't allow you to put 2 ponies in it, let alone 2 horses.

to tow, you need a proper 4x4 - look at Pajeros, Toyota Surfs, Isuzu Troopers, Landcruisers, Discos, Shoguns etc - a proper, meaty 4x4 with a high kerbweight and guts. I just wouldn't risk my horse by towing with anything less than this, especially having seen a trailer get a wobble on with a huge Disco going only 45mph - the risk of this with a smaller car is much much greater.

Thats the good thing about the Kia.... It has a huge towing capacity and its cheap because its not a big brand

I was told the towing capacity is 3500 so you could tow a house with it, let alone a horse

The towing capacity of the kia sorento is 2800kg. My SWB shogun is for sale and it also has a towing capacity of 2800kg. We are looking to get a sorento instead.

LPG is the way forward! I took 2 big horses 140 miles last weekend and it cost me 23 pounds... Towing with a 4L Jeep Cherokee and a Bateson trailer btw. Bateson are definitely the lightest and every bit as good as an Ifor IMO.

True Towing Capability...
The Kia Sorento has won numerous “Tow Car of the Year” awards* from magazines and organisations that understand the demands put on a vehicle used for regular towing. With a 3.5 tonne towing capacity,** a strong and increasingly hard to come by ladder-framed chassis and allindependent
suspension, the Sorento will take you and your trailer wherever you want to go.

But I have also seen it quoted that it is 2800.... It may depend on whether it is a manual or auto

KIA SORENTO! I love mine more than you could ever imagine (I'm sure there's something illegal about it

) Fantastic car for driving, nippy despite its size, I get 32 mpg but I'm driving round MK all day - I get 36mpg on normal driving. Fantastic tow car - I tow a Cheval Liberte 2003XL with one horse and sometimes forget he's there because it tows so easily! Just had its first MOT and flew through no problems.
