My mare had a scrap with the big muscley 16.3hh gelding in her field, he kicked out and got her high leg on the bone between the hock and fetlock, the leg is swollen around the fetlock and she has 3 cuts around the leg, guessing they must have bucked at the same time and hit each other (i only heard it and have seen them do this before) at first she was holding it up but now she is walking on it and just resting it when possible, and walks with a limp (but not really that noticable)

what damage could have been done? and what should i do to help healing? i put cooling gel on the area without a cut around the fetlock, where the swelling is the worst and purple sprayed the wounds.

thanks

Sounds very similar to a kick my lad had. I cold hosed it twice a day for a couple of days, and cleaned then applied aloe vera gelly (good quality from forever living product). This prevented infection setting in and helped to speed up the healing process of the cuts. It also acted as a coolant and brought down the inflammation.

Luckily he did not sustain any damage to tendons etc but does have a bony type splint where the impact on the bone was. Doesn't cause him any pain or discomfort and should be reabsorbed by the body within the next 12 - 18 months.

Just keep an eye on it to make sure she doesn't go lame and it does not become infected.

Hope she is feeling well in herself, my boy always knows how to get extra apple from me when he's feeling a bit down! lol

I think I would be getting the vet .A friend left a slight lameness and cut on a leg after a kick and a long way down the line ended up with a horse with a bone chip and an infection ended up permenantly lae horse and loss of use claim .
May be I have just seen this go horribly wrong too often to leave thingS like this .

If you notice she is lame in walk and you are not sure how bad the cuts are then maybe she should see a vet, am with the other poster, seen too many "not sure" injuries left only to have big problems later.

She could have cracked the bone. If you let her out and she runs off on it when she is feeling better, it could then break completely and you will lose her. If she is lame in walk and you have insurance get the vet!

As others have suggested, a nasty kick could have caused a hairline or spiral fracture of the bone. An incomplete fracture can easily become complete if not treated immediately. Of course, it could be just bad bruising but if it was my horse I wouldn't take the chance, I'd get the vet out as an emergency.

oh no, i didnt realise it could be so serious! i will tell my parents and get them to arrange a call out. thankyou for your help, just out if interest what would a fracture mean for her? are they difficult to treat?

Right now, you have no problem and she will get better with a bit of box rest. Let her run around on it and complete the fracture and you'll be calling a man with a gun :( She's probably fine but if you are insured there is no point in taking the risk. Get some xrays! Good luck.

In the unlikely event that it is a fracture, it would depend which bone was fractured. But a fracture is never good news and bad fractures often mean pts. But hun, you just need the vet to look at the leg before you start to panic! Stay calm, just get it seen asap x
