kicked! reasurance needed!

so my accident prone gelding came in wednesday morning looking like he had been in a brawl!
huge kick marks over his body, lots of marks but most worryingly is a cut to the inside of his hind leg, roughly where the top if the split bone is.

he isn't lame!
cut quite deep.
looks like the slice from a shoe.
was nice and clean at first.

anti bs weds, thus and this morning and obviously few more days.
yesterday swollen around cut and today still gunky.
been poulicing it, still turned out hoping swelling will go down.

Im still worried about where the impact was.
could he have fractured his splint?
reasure me is will start to look better soon?
 
i am pldancing to get the vet monday if not improved like it should.
i know my vet, if he came today he wouldn't x ray until at least next Wednesday and not change what im doing.
 
My horse is terrible for getting into fights, he thinks he's a real hard man bless him and ends up injured! He is now no longer allowed to be in a field with other horses, he has his own section of the paddock fenced off, with a horse he gets on with very well in another section of paddock next to him so he isnt lonely. I would think about something like this for your horse, sounds like the group of horses he is out with isnt suitable for your horse so to prevent this happening again I'd look into other options for turning him out.

I'm sure the wound will heal soon and it will look better, but you might be better getting the vet out just for peace of mind. You dont know what damage has or has not been done, and horses legs are funny things so if you want reassurance I'd get the vet to come and have a look. I'm sure its nothing, but its better to be safe than sorry.

I've spoken to vet.
I've dealt with alot of injuries and this one didn't require urgent vet attention.
its being looked after and vet will wait a few more days to see if it needs an x ray.

The worst injury a horse of mine had was a small cut on a front leg, that whilst not big was deep(ish). I didn't call the vet, as I really didn't think it was anything to worry about. I just kept it clean, and kept the horse turned out in a paddock on his own for a day or so.

The leg swelled, and the wound was hot - que the vet. Immediate reaction was to send him to hospital because of infection, and the proximity of the cut to a tendon. £2k later, the leg was healed.

So, the moral of the story is - if it's deep, and swollen, call the vet ( I could have lost my horse through my own stupidity).
 
I think as you say, you probably do know best, you know your horse after all. Mine have come in with kicks and scrapes on occasion but I usually just clean them up and monitor them. My oldie got a nasty kick which had a bit of a hole, where a shoe must have caught, very high up on his front leg jsut sort of on his elbow. He was very sore on it and it was pretty swollen. I knew who'd kicked him (the only one who'd dare! Lol) so I know he packs a punch. However, said oldie is the boss and the whole thing had happened due to him having a major fall-out with the 2nd in command. It would not have bene appropriate to separate them or stable either of them as this would have made him more stressed out so i just left him out with his herd as I knew he can't get bullied and he's no idiot - if he's in pain he doesn't do daft things.

He was absolutely fine just felt sorry for himself for a week or so - I checked the wound at least twice a day and, had it started to not look right then yes I would have got a vet but as it was, the odd painkiller/anti-inflam, some antiseptic and some TLC was all he needed.

So, I guess what I'm saying is yes, people do have horror stories where seemingly small injuries turn out to be nasty but I feel in the main, they're not.

yes you hear all if these horror stories. something seemingly minor turns out to be major.
i would never begrudge my horse the vet.
so although im worried im sure i am doing the right thing.
 
I had this a month ago. On a Sunday night of course. We cold hosed it and and put a dressing on, and did this 2x a day for a few days. Kept to her usual routine of in at night, then out during day on her own. Luckily it didn't go hot or skanky, and her lameness improved a bit every day. It took 3 weeks for her to come fully sound again. At all times she remained well in herself if you get me, I never thought it had infected - otherwise vet would have been called straight away.

Very hard to know what is the right thing to do, but I am not a fan of administering antibiotics routinely if at all possible - I would rather wait and see if it is possible to manage without. We kept it clean and covered until we were sure it was not infected and made liberal use of proper antibacterial purple spray from the farm animal section of our local ag merchant.
 
my 2yr old came in 3 weeks ago, with some very superficial cuts on his leg, but hock was massively swollen, now had the vet out 3 times for it! firstly tried anti b's 2 a day for 5 days, then had a steroid injection and now I've been given steroid tablets to give him, 20 every other day!

The vet has said that if he's out playing/fighting with the other horses he is proberly twisting it, which is stopping the swelling from going down, so I need to turn him out on his own to stop him from doing more damage! and to keep cold hosing etc! but we've had to take the mare away to try and stop them messing about too!
 
its such a worry.

my next worry is finding a yard that i like and am happy at and he likes and is safe.

after the injury he had last year when there were doubts he would ever be sound imagine really fed up of him being cut and hurt.
i want a healthy horse!
