As the title says really.
What could be the cause?
Its not when its pulled tight ironically but when its first done up on a couple of holes on each side?
Its a fairly recent habit so any ideas?

Sounds like it could be pinching? have you checked for any signs of rubbing? is the girth clean? (sometimes mud/grease etc can rub and be uncomfortable

My horse was doing this so I got my saddler out and his saddle did need adjusting quite a bit. Once it had been done he stopped so there could be a problem with your saddle maybe.

my horse will do this when she's stressed/excited - saddle and back is fine - she had a really bad back when i got her so she's checked regulariliy - both saddler and back lady think it's now just remembered pain that surfaces more when she's agitated

I'd have back/saddle checked, then if you have the all clear then it could just be associated with work, so then I'd be looking into if the horse seems sound and enjoys enjoy the work your asking of him, is he fit enough? could he be struggling? does he seem forward going and happy enough with your school work etc.

Is your saddle cloth rubbing at all, does he ever feel slighly tense when you first get on, or take longer than normal to work in?

Perhaps try a sheep skin/gel cover for the girth, are you pulling up his girth too tight, some people do have the girths tighter than they need to, purely because the saddle doesnt fit as well as it should....all just suggestions of course.

Or has your horse altered in weight, therefore the balance of the saddle has altered, does the girth following the natual girthing line?

My 4 yr old has been doing this. He had his saddle checked and it was found to have awonky tree (naughty as it was bought brand new) so new saddle and he also had Bowen Therapy to make sure he was all comfy. He was then given 3 weeks off.

When he came back into work for the first 2 rides no reaction at all, and then he started doing it again.

I personally think that its habit now as he wasn't naughty to be ridden after he'd done it and if he's uncomfortable he def lets you know about it!

i'm going to pop a girth sleeve on just to give him no excuses and then we'll just have to get on with it!

Get everything cheked if it still happens then you know he is just being grumpy about having to have his saddle on which lets face it I would be grumpy about too (Horses can't mess about all day on H&H forum pretending to work)

My mare has been nipping my bum for 6 years and everything is fine with her

If she does it more on the right hand side than on the left, then it could be stomach ulcers. That's one of the symptoms.

Mine used to do it and then I swapped to curved girths and he hardly does it at all now. He hated having a straight girth pinch his elbows.

have you had a feel around all the muscles especially the pectoral muscles where the girth goes often these can get tight which can cause such a reaction. As an equine massage therapist I would definately recomend having back/saddle checked thoroughly just to be sure.
