My little whippet had an ultrasound today that showed an irregular kidney. Her bloods showed increased protein levels.
The vet recommended the royal canin renal diet. I have no problem with her having this, but I'm slightly cynical about these prescription diets. Do any of you have any recommendations of what I could feed her to ease the burden on her kidneys? She is 14, the vet said that this isn't something that will get better, but we obviously want her to be s comfortable as she can go what time she has left.

I have a rescue dog, no particular breed but small collie size. She was diagnosed with kidney disease 2 years ago, she is now just coming up 16!
I have never changed her diet and she had no special medication. I just make sure she is kept hydrated, she really likes her water fresh so I change the water in her bowl very frequently. I don't know if this is just her, but sometimes she goes to her water, sniffs it and looks at me. I change the water and she then drinks.
I am not sure if you can compare human kidney disease but I was diagnosed 5 years ago and was very ill. I was saved from needing dialysis but don't have full kidney function. I am now completely off medication and just have 3monthly blood tests to monitor the situation. I hope this might make you feel a little less worried.

Please follow veterinary advice rather than someone on the Internet saying not to bother.

The Rc feed is low protein, low phosphorus to aid kidney function. There are other diets that are also low protein, but many of the commercially prepared ones are very high in protein (especially Bakers). Have a research - you may be able to find a low protein diet that isn't as expensive.

If your remark was aimed at me Equidae, I certainly did not mean the OP to ignore veterinary advice. I was just trying to reassure her that her dog is not necessarily about to die because it has kidney disease. Sorry if I gave the wrong impression.
My dog is fed Natures Menu and certainly not Bakers!
