Hello, I posted on here several months back. My boy Charlie who is a terrier cross of 13. Got diagnosed with early stages of kidney failure several months ago. Recently his behaviour has changed. He seems really unsettled, increased uruination , shortness of breath and becoming tierd very easily. He’s on burns and the supplement pronefra. We’ve also changed a lot of his treats. It’s so hard to tell what’s at the route. He’s showing signs of other ailments such as cloudy eyes and does have arthritis. Is it the kidneys. Old age. Or something else? I know it’s been warm so Iv been accounting for this. He’s clipped, and we use a fan. It’s upsetting as I feel like the boy I had is changing it’s heartbreaking and I just want to make him better. Sorry for the ramble I probaly sound crazy I’m just worried! Any one with any advice please?

No advice other than maybe getting the vets to run some bloods again so they can compare kidney function, sending hugs though as it's horrible when they get old and you know you have limited time with them and are just trying to do the best you can for them x

I would take him back to the vet tbh. Unfortunately there is no cure for kidney failure - he can't be made better but he might be able to be made more comfortable. You probably need to start thinking about the quality of his life, does he have more good days than bad ones and how bad are the bad ones. I am a great believer in better a day too soon than an hour too late. The very last thing that we can do for our pets is to spare them a painful death and at 13 your Charlie has had a good long life, compared to many dogs.

I’d also recommend a vet check..heart and kidneys would be a priority..once you have done a visit and you have a diagnosis, there are many things you can do for your old boy..
if it is his heart or kidneys , a particular diet, meds etc will be suggested..
.certainly keep him cool in this hot weather.
regarding his arthritis,I would ask the vet if the favorites such as yumove etc can be added to a dog on …( whatever meds may be suggested)
.A soft cushion in his bed for his aching bones etc..
don’t worry too much about his eyes..old age can bring this too, there is nothing to do for this, the dog will manage well, but may seek you out more for reassurance, especially in the darker evenings.

The shortness of breath and tiredness may well be due to anaemia. The kidneys secrete erythropoeitin, which promotes red blood cell formation.
I would take him back to the vet.
