My cob has always been one to drink alot but he's been drinking even more recently and I've noticed his pee is very thick and yesterday he appeared to be straining to pee ...BUT that said his new trick to avoid going to the mounting block is to pretend to want a pee so not 100% sure it wasn't an avoidance tactic!!!

Anyway decided to get the vet out as I'm not completely happy that he's not got an infection of some sort as he's a bit less energetic as he usually is (he's a cob that goes bounce a lot!!), and he just generally doesn't quiet seem to be himself. :( But in the meantime (vet can't come out til Monday as it's not an emergency) does anyone have any experiences of kidney infections? I've started him on milk thistle seeds as these can help with kidney issues.

I've had a kidney infection myself - v v painful and I'm sure your horse would let you know about it.
Horse wise we had an old pony who got a bladder infection (not a kidney infection i know) and he was peeing blood! Turned out he had diabetes and the glucose in his pee was making him prone to infections.
Good luck with the vet- however if I thought it was a kidney infection I would say it IS an emergency.

Typically of my lad...vet cannot find anything physical. He is scouring but he always does when it's wet outside because he's got a sugar intolerance so the grass having it's autumn flush is creating those problems. I got a sample and it came back clear so I'm continuing with the milk thistle and the last couple of days he's been bouncing fit!! The vet agrees that his initial lethergy was a reaction to his increased work load as I'm getting him fit for hunting next month, so he's been ridden 6 days a week in hard work. I did a 5 mile hack yesterday at break neck speed and he didn't break a sweat I'm inclinded to think he's most definately on his way to being fit enough!!

He's definately still happy to eat and does drink alot but as I said he always has done so that doesn't worry me, vet said obviously if he's scouring he will of course drink more. He's extreamly happy with his weight and said he's wished all other heavy cobs had muscles like mine does!!:o:D

Big relief and he's totally back to his cheeky self and ready to go.
