My 21yro geld was admitted weds with colic...the vets have done every test possible...checked for peritionitis, laminitis - he suffers , from this they tested for cushings lamintis, parasites, everything.....they are now testing for kidney stones...and my vet has said there is nothing that can be done, but since looking up on internet there seems to be treatment available without surgery....please can anyone shed any light on this....this is URGENT!!!
thanks very much x

Completely different species but my dog is being treated for stones with a feed that breaks them down (apparently surgery is a last option). Sure their must be something similar for horses. If you're not happy with your vet don't be frightened to go for a second opinion to a more specialist vet. Good luck, let us know how you get on.

i will be getting 2nd opinion i think as i'm not entirely happy that my vet has said nothing else can be done...when searching i found there is....i'm taking urgent samples to liphook in the am he's in alot of pain heart rate is 86 now all other tests have come back with nothing major and again since researching this kidney stones i have noticed that he is showing classic signs of it....i will be helping him rid these....i've heard shock wave and cider vinegar - he's usually on this with feed...i'll keep you posted!!!
thanks for the support too much appreciated i'm not giving up without a fight - this is his life in my hands at the moment and i love him dearly and truely lost without him i can't eat or anything i just want him better!!!!! at least for a few more years yet anyway x

Has he definitely been diagnosed with kidney stones hun? In humans, some kidney stones can be zapped in situ by ultrasound. They break into tiny pieces and are then passed out with the urine as normal. I have a sneaking suspicion that the same area in the horse is a lot deeper and therefore ultrasound wouldn't work. I'm pretty certain too that a special diet can help prevent further kidney stones but can't break up existing ones. But if he hasn't been confirmed as having kidney stones, take care because as you desperately search for the cause of your lad's pain you will be able to see symptoms of everything under the sun.

Because your lad is 21, there could be many obscure reasons for his pain, some not nice. If it were me I'd get him referred and admitted IMMEDIATELY to a specialist horse hospital. Don't know where you're based hun but find the best around and get your ned there fast. It sounds as though he needs urgent help xxx

UPDATE: the bloods and urine that I took to Liphook Equine Hosp in hants this am came back with nothing too major - apart from liver enzymes raised but not too high..(thank goodness) and his white cells raised...it has been definately been diagonsed with a VIRUS and colitis which we knew anyway from when the vet came out Sunday he is now being pumped with protein as he was loosing alot hence the diaorrea there wasn't enough protein in his body, his stools have know begun to harden, he was grazing for couple of hours this am and drinking by himself and his heart rate came down to 68/70...but since being put back on the drip it's gone back up to 86...or around that he is slowly becoming back to his old self...which is great news but every 10mins or so he zones out then eats, has a drink, pee's and again repeats it....but thats now been put down to the drugs, his body has bloated right out it's horrific to see, i'm trying everything possible to get him back to normality....Liphook is a specialist equine hospital that I unfortunately know well, so today I've come back from seeing him feeling slightly more positive of his recovery yet still not entirely comfortable until he comes home safe and well...which should be early next week fingers crossed.....i'll keep you updated.
thanks for support and advice
xx

if he has raised liver enzymes that means his liver is under stress or has damage some where so why would you pump him full of protine when the liver has to work a lot harder to break down protine so that will not be helping it at all?x

well i'm getting very angry now...and waiting to hear back from another vet as since they have given him protein his heart rate has gone upto 108 this am......his sheath is soooo swollen as his his gut and other areas....before all this he was beginning to get better heart rate dropped etc.....i will sue the vets should they have cost me my horse's life....the poor boy is in soo much discomfort and it's killing me inside to see him like it.....but you would think you can trust your vet....obviously not as i strongly believe they are doing everything wrong and are killing him rather than helping!!!
he's too weak to be moved to another vets and it's costing me a fortune already.....although his life is far more important than that!!!

just got off phone to vets....his heart rate is below 80 again and he's passed some more droppings and is looking perkier...he's just doing a perotineal tab and scan again right now as i type this...and will call me back.... i've asked them not to give him anymore protein and we also need to wait for the faeces samples to come back.
thanks for all the advice everyone too......so glad this forum is here full of lovely people

more news......ruled out kidney stones....vet has done a scan which showed a bleed into his abdomen....but was cloting so his body is trying to repair itself which is great....he's passed more normal droppings and heart rate again has come back down more....he checked his liver and spleen and hey didn't show anything untoward...they are using a thing thats usually used for perserving bodies...the healing structures...this has been used in liverpool specialist hospital...and he'll not be getting anymore protein except via a small amount of mix with his bran...they are just trying to stablise him and then deal with the bleed....as they are not able to find location of it. but he's still not out of the woods with any of this news.....i hate the waiting game we are also waiting for the faeces test to come back to check for parasite's.
hope he gets stronger and better real quick....i'm missing him madly and so his mate my mare....bless her.
