It was suggested today that our pony may need a different bit for cross country. He is very enthusiastic and something is needed to give a little more control.
He is currently ridden in a happy mouth jointed snaffle in all disciplines. It really is only for the CC that it would be needed.
It was suggested that a kimblewick might suit him. I know nothing about this bit or about bits with curb action as have never used them before. He does not like a gag and just leans on it. Any thoughts or suggestions gratefully received

contrary to what alot of people think a Kimblewick isn't a strong severe bit. It is a milder than a pelham is great for strong ponies who tend to lean or take a hold and the advantage is that it can be ridden with one rein as opposed to a pelham which requires 2. My cob is ridden in a kimblewick. I tried loads of different snaffle bits and a hanging cheek and he still took a strong hold and refused to listen. He is much better in the kimblewick so I would definitely recommend you try it.

Like Spike123, I ride my cob in a kimblewick and she goes really well in it. I've tried her in a variety of different bits and she just didn't go well in them.

I have better control and I have a happier horse so happy days! She is so softer in it and listens a million times better.

Give the kimblewick a try and see how it goes. Obviously each horse is different but the kimblewick is probably one of the best horsey items I've ever bought.

My friend has recently changed to a kimblewick and loves it, it's nice cos it's not as heavy as a pelham iyswim but just provides that extra bit of control
