Been using a kimblewick for jumping, and getting on well with it, although it has a hard, straight metal mouthpiece (mullen?) which I feel that ponio resists against sometimes...? Any ideas about what may be a nicer mouthpiece for him? Was thinking happymouth... maybe with a joint? Ideas!?

Happy mouth with a lozenge? some horses don't even like the nut cracker action of a jointed.
ETA some people don't like the happy mouth, but i have found them to be good. Keep an eye on them though and check often for damage. Only other bit i personally would like to try would be something from the neue scheule range, but are expensive

The cambridge or low port is probably one of the mildest mouth peices you can get. Unlike the simle mullen mouth it gives the tounge room.

Metal is probably the kindest material to put in the mouth as it has no 'drag' on it - things like happy mouths have quite a high friction. They're warmer but no softer - if you're pulling hard enough for the 'give' in them to be apparent there's a problem! Rubber mouth peices are a little softer but are horribly thick and many horses find them bulky.

Try a cambridge (low port) pelham instead. The two reins give more finess and the mouth peice is readily accepted. Most horses I've tried it on like it.

Just to burst a few bubbles the cambridge port is insufficient to give any significant tongue relief as its essentially a straight bar.

However many horses do like this quiet mouthpiece and generally its only around 12mm in diameter which does give a little more space.
