Recently bought a nice hunting cob but very, very strong! Don't want to over bit him as he is only 7yrs, and can happily hack out/school in a snaffle.
Have thought about trying a 'kineton' noseband and would be grateful for any views.
Thank you.

I used to use one on a lunatic pony out hunting - it was the only thing that stopped him without cutting his mouth - its very harsh but effective and if used sympathetically is fine imo

i used to use one on my old horse
she was very strong but didnt like alot of metal work in her mouth, so with the kineton i could use it with her normal snaffle
put some sheepskin on the nosepiece to soften the affect, but it was still affective, yet not harsh, and solved alot of our problems
worth a try i would say, i also used the myler combo bit, which worked along the same lines, pressure on nose etc, and was also successful

Used to use one on my old horse, it was quite effective and did the trick, all his strength came from his neck he was actualy quite soft in the mouth.
They are quite harsh but i supose better than using harsh bits which can somtimes make matters worse.
think ive still got it knocking around in the tack room somewhere, theyre not cheap either.
Definatly worth a try

HI,

I used one ages ago on one of my ponies. My mum bought it for us at the time, when they were a relatively new idea. It worked.

I wish people would stop saying they are harsh!

They aren't - quite the opposite, they limit the pull on the bars on the mouth and transfer to the nose. They don't have a mechanical action like a myler combo or hackamore.

Very useful for horses than are prone to ripped lips as it will stop the mouth being pulled to shreds.

i guess what i mean is they are harsh in the wrong hands (same can be said for all bits i guess)!! - if a rider constantly pulls on the reins they can put a lot of pressure on the bars which can be uncomfortable for the horse - totally agree re cutting the mouth tho and v effective on a hard puller.

Well a hauling on a single jointed snaffle versus hauling on one with a kineton, I'd chose the kineton as at least pressure is spread over a wider area to the nose and the bars.

I'd rather upgrade the bit and never pull. What I don't understand is that why with my arsenal of bits I have snaffle mouthed horses? Very boring!

My trainer whom was competing at GP level with a famous rider always rode youngsters in the Kineton noseband as she said it eased the mouth from the bit and taught them to carry themselves from an early age! I must admit, her horses had superb necks, beautifully schooled with very soft light contacts so I presume it worked for her.

I tried a kineton with my very strong boy, didn't have any brakes i'm afraid!
Have now found a cheltenham gag works well, i only have to ask once and he gets the message, i'm now not constantly pulling on his mouth!

I had a very bloody mouth after using the kineton.
Good luck on finding the right sort of brakes!
