Hi All,

Think I need some positive or negative vibes :-(((

My boy was purchased in May, diagnosed with KS & SI in August, operated (ligaments cut) in Sept. On the road to recovery and finally he is now sound, however, when ever asked to work (by this I mean hand walking over poles or doing his 10-20 lunge work - with no aids on) he rears vertical, then trys to cow kick, then normally takes off and I either manage to hold on and suffer rope burn even with my gloves !!! or he gets away and is off galloping round the arena / field area!!

I'm really gutted and am now becoming quite scared of having to do my rehab work. My physio is away this week so will be touching base next week, but I seriously fear the prospect of having to ride him (when it comes to it that is). He even rears sometimes on the way to the field - normally this is him throwing his toys out of the pram IMO as his field mate is crying for him and he can't get there fast enough - but then it might not be this, that might be my thoughts on it.

He's only 4 but is becoming an extremely strong well built ID ! that I am simply to small for :-((

Don't know what to do. Having lost 2 early this year really don't need this.

Don't want to send him back to the dealer as it would be unfair on the next person.

Not quite the same, but our mare was diagnosed with arthritis in her spine earlier this year and we have been through lengthy rehab. To start with, she would turn in and rear up at my daughter when lunging - we got her instructor down and she didn't do it with her. We started by giving a calmer when lunging and my daughter soon learnt how to keep her out and going forwards.

Now she's at the riding stage, and horse is throwing in a few moves, so I dont think it's going to be plain sailing!

It's so hard to know what is pain, what is anticipation, and what is just trying to get out of work and back to the field.

Can you speak to your vet? Is your horse on any pain relief? Do you think he's in pain? Vet might be able to prescribe something to help (ours offered pain relief and muscle relaxants, although we decided she didn't need them).

I know someone who's horse is a few year on from KS op, and it took her a long time to get over the anticipated pain - however she has made an amazing recovery and is a real inspiration to keep going.

A horse belonging to a friend of mine had kissing spine surgery and once back being ridden he was still rearing and napping and generally behaving badly. She apparently got Michael Peace out to see him and he rode him and worked with him and showed her how to manage him. She said hes hugely better and only occasionally tries it on but she knows how to deal with it now
