My mare had 3 DSP's removed last week @ Rossdales, all went well and she is now home. But i have been having problems keeping her dressings on. She is so itchy i think she is rolling quite a bit.

Does any one have any tips to help keep them on for more than a day!?

Also she has become very twitchy around the wound, the vets said not to worry, but i just wondered if any one else had the same issue?

Any advice/ help would be greatly recieved!!

How are the dressings secured? My horse had wire loops left in on his back and the dressings were kept in place by lacing ribbon between them. He lay down and rolled a lot, ended up pulling a couple of the loops out of his skin but as long as the lacing was tight the dressing stayed on. don't you have to change them every day anyway?

Luckily my boy wasn't twitchy about the wound, even when it was infected and i had to squeeze it a bit every day to help it drain. (bleargh)

I could never get my horse' polster plast to stay on for more than a day. Keeping a rug over it at all times helps to keep it on for as long as possible. Without the pressure of a rug on it they just peel up straight away.

Don't worry about the twitchyness. My horse had to be sedated just to get the rug on and off every day as he became so touchy. You only had to point at him to send him into a panic. Once the dressings remained off and the stitches were out he was much happier.

I put manuka honey on the wound to help with the heeling and I think that soothed the itchiness. It certainly healed well.

Thank you everyone, for your help. She has now got some polster plaster ones that Rossdales have sent so i will see we go. I only have to get through the next week and half and they have said she won't need it dressed anymore.

I am glad to say she is not as twitch as your horse bounce and is happy to have her rug changed. She loves being scratched lots. I will try your Manuka honey.

Mine was rather hypersensitive about everything, bless him.

I would possibly leave it another week before putting the honey on as you want to ensure the wound heals from the inside out. I started it using it once the stitches came out after 2 weeks or more.
