Hi
my dressage horse had the op for KS in june and is now at week 15 post op. I have been hacking him out for two weeks now at a walk and everything is going well. Is there anyone out there that can let me know how their horse is going, say a year down the line after the op and whether anyone is competing/training at a higher level than post op? Also, I'm wondering if i should be using a particular numnah (or not?) or whether i should buy a different saddle (e.g. the wow saddle?) Any info people could give me would be appreciated

Mine had the operation quite a while ago now, he was winning everything at Novice/ elementary dressage after his op ( whereas before he was floundering at prelim level) He has since been sold to a dressage home because he was too chicken cross country and I do eventing. Not sure what he is doing now, the owners dont bother to stay in touch

He was very very very fussy about saddles- the only two models he would go in were WOW for dressage and saddle company saddle for jumping (saddle co saddles are serge panels so are be more comfty ) he just had a normal Hi-wither numah ( numed) - those are the best saddle cloths as they dont put pressure on the spine.

Glad to hear things are going well for you Djcrista. Can you let me know whether you had any reaction from your horse when you put the saddle on and got on the first time post op?

Mine is 12 weeks post op and goes back to the vet tomorrow to hopefully get the all clear to ride but as he was so reactive before the op I'm rather nervous about how he is going to be. Luckily I've got a willing victim (I mean volunteer) to be test pilot first of all.

I shall be using my WOW dressage saddle once back on board as he was happy in that before and it can obviously be adjusted fully to meet any changes in shape.

wow well done for getting back on so quickly! I think mine took longer as she had lost all her muscles and weight pre op so building up took forever and she is 17! but she is looking fab now just got to get back into the swing of things....!

can we see pictures?!

Iv now swapped her bit after this pic and she is going nicely in the myler....her flexion is sooo much better! just wish she was younger now!

Thanks Beth for all the info...much appreciated. O_B..... good to hear he was doing so well after the op in competitions. Bounce......There was no reaction to me getting on board. I was the one reacting lol. I just leant over him and then got on and off whilst stood. No reaction. So someone led me around the arena. No reaction. Then walked out on the rd the next day! The only concern i am having now is that there is a slight swelling over one of the spinous processess after i have hacked out (at walk only) and take saddle off. He is not reactive to it and its not sore on manipulation. The funny thing is that the swelling is over a 'complete' process. It goes down after icing. He has had 3 removed. There are 3 dips in his back and no swellingon the operated parts. Does anyone have any idea why the swelling is over an un operated process lying next to an operated one? Can you all tell me how many processess your horses had removed and at what level? I have to say that my boy is a different horse. His paces seem so much more free. Holly P...the pics look lovely! It seems that the op is proving to be very sucessful for us all !

My boy had 4 removed. I'm taking him back to Sven today for his 12 week check up. I'll see if I can ask Sven a question about swelling over the complete process, if I remember and he isn't too busy.
Could it be that the blood flow is somehow restricted by the saddle due to the complete process now being more prominent next to a dip?

My horse had the op in January & is now back showjumping at British Novice level (bigger at home) & cubbing. Also going much nicer on the flat.

Has put on more condition than she ever had before (skinny TB) as she used to be a picky eater. Now eats up much bigger haylage nets - guess it was hurting to pull from a haynet before.

Have had to have both her saddles adjusted twice in the last 8 weeks & she's still changing. I'm using a Le Mieux sheepskin which is spine free:)

Good to hear about the success of the op for your horse cleoT. I'm trying to order the lemieux sheepskin at the mo but have had no success as they seem to be very popular! Bounce, how did the review go at sven's?

I'm glad to report that Sven is very happy with my boy's progress and has said I can now ride. I got on last night and he was absolutely fab, not a hint of a bronc or a tense back. Completely relaxed and happy. I have to say I never thought I'd get to this point with him and I have to thank everyone on here who have offered their advice and support, so thank you to all of you.
