I brought home my new kitten on Sunday. He's 9 weeks old.

Unfortunately he has terrible dihorrea!

I'm feeding him exactly what the breeder did (dry kitten food and water) he apparently has been wormed and next due was this weekend. He apparently had been deflead the morning I got him too!

I have started the panacur 3 day wormer last night as he also rubbed his bum on the floor.

He's perfectly normal in every other way, very active!

What could be causing this?
Thanks

Worms, stress, Guardia or lots of other things.

What dry food? Which wormer. I worm my kittens with Milbemax but never let them go to new homes until fully vaccinated and at least 13 weeks.

Vets. If you've not changed the food then go to the vets.

Just a thought, have you been giving any milk? Many cats are lactose intolerant.

I always understood kittens should be a minimum of 10 weeks before going to a new home. If he wasn't due for worming till next weekend it could be the worming that has upset him. I would get him to the vets to be checked over, it doesn't take long for a kitten to get dehydrated.

Yes he was weaned, he's not had any milk. It's go cat kitten complete (not my choice but I though I'd keep him on this till he's bigger and settled) I did offer him a tiny bit of Applause Kitten chicken breast but he ignored it!

I have an appointment at the vets this afternoon.

Thank you

He has the runs before I wormed him. He's drinking very well so I don't think he's getting dehydrated. Vets later today so hopefully can find a reason! X

Its good that he's drinking well. Hopefully its just a bit of stress at changing homes and the vet will be able to give him something to settle his tum. Let us know how you go on please.

vets is a good idea to hopefully put your mind at rest.

I have raised a couple of litters of kittens and have found GoCat kitten fantastic. They dont gorge purely because it is delicious, they all looked fit and well IMO I would keep him on that unless you can afford significantly better food (royal canin etc.) GoCat is the best of the affordable bunch. I fed mine a very small amount (at his age 1/4 packet tops) of whiskers meat, they find it easier to eat as babies, if you are soft ( ;) ) you could keep him on half a pack am and pm but dont ever replace dry food completely. His teeth will fall out!
If he WAS wormed just when you got him and he had worms at the time this is most likely what is causing the runs, if not it is probably just a regular upset stomach! (but deffo still go to the vet to check because once sick they go downhill V quickly!)
I may be wrong and cant go back to check but if Im right in saying you got him under the impression he was wormed, then wormed him because of this that may have made it worse and if so do NOT let the vet worm him again!!! Vets are VERY good at pushing a pill down thier throat whilst telling you he needs worming and ker-ching thats another £15!! - this is not good for baby stomachs!!
If you have others cats they may also have given him a little bug. If he looks happy in himself I wouldnt worry but again, deffo take him to vets anyway! :)

and dont you know the rules of HHO?!!! we should probably see some piccies eh?!! ;)

when I had my first litter I wanted to keep them until 8 weeks and when they got to 6 weeks it shocked me that people let them go at that age (6 weeks used to be THE age to let puppies/kittens go?!) mine were barely eating solids at 6 weeks!! however by 8 weeks they were causing havoc, eating me out of house and home and finished weaning from mum so I didnt see the problem with them going at that point, I have kept in touch with nearly all of them and had no problems, behaviour or otherwise reported back :)
I know with kc puppies they have to be kept until thier 2nd vacc, probably the same for ped kittens.

Its just something I have read I think. I think when we got our cats they were around 10 weeks, but their previous owner/breeder didn't have a clue, hadn't started weaning at 6 weeks and didn't know what to give them so they certainly weren't experts.
KC reg pups don't have to have had their 2nd vaccination, or even their first but for Assured Breeders they do have to be 8 weeks old I think.

Ahhh think thats what Im thinking of! Its tricky because ideally I may have kept them for longer but I suppose really as you point out it depends on how they have been treated up to that point and IMO most importantly how well they are eating and how confident they are without their mum.
Mine were illiigitmate (the tinker is now spayed!! - and husband is still hanging around a year later!!! is that cute or naughty?!! - depends what mood I'm in  and how low we are on cat food (he has quite an appetite!!!:p) Anyway, if I were a breeder and I had the set up for kittens to run riot I would probably have kept them for another week or so but then on the other hand if they are eating solids, happy to leave the litter for an hour or so (used to do shifts in the living room ;) ) then what more is there to be gained? (just musing thoughts here :))

So we visited the vet. All the concerns cause he's so little but he was pleased I'd started the panacur and to carry on with that (3 day course) and gave me Synulox for 5 days. Said chicken and rice or egg and rice diet for 2 days then back on the kitten food. And if no improvement straight back with a sample.

BUT!!! I saw a flea on him!!! I have treated my dog and my house just before he came so it must have come on him. But the breeder said she de-flead him the morning I got him so I'm scared to frontline him so soon????

You shouldnt go back onto normal kitten food straight away, always reintroduce different food slowly over several days to avoid tummy upsets. x

he is ceeeeuuutteee!!!!! :D

If you saw a flea on him you can be pretty sure he wasnt flead. I would flea him again, especially with womring otherwise he will get worms from the fleas again!!
I dont why people sell kittens and are dishonest like this! I never did the last worm treatment before they went (mum was wormed then they were wormed at I think something like 2 weeks and 6 weeks or something) and I was honest about my reasons being that when they go to the vet they will want to worm them 'just incase' I havent and nobody was ever disgruntled by it?! (mind you, I did also offer to worm them infront of them if they wanted them wormed so maybe thats why) why lie?! poor kitten! probably hasnt been wormed or flead until you got him!

Frontline isn't much good imo, advocate is far better. Be very careful with the dosing though, our cats tiny anyway (still has to have the kitten/ferret one as an adult). And a lot of the wormers/flea stuff are for 12wks plus.
And agree re go cat complete. Ours turns her nose up at most cat food, except feline fayre & gourmet gold, but loves go cat complete. Farm cat also eats whiskas, because she eats a can a day & its cheap. I've since been told that as far as cans go, whiskas is a better one.
And very very cute, so adorable.
