Sorry to be thick but i have read a couple of posts on the slaughtering of horses within the uk only and one of the posts says we have only 2 licenced slaughter houses in the uk - now i think this is appalling. (why the poor animals, not just horses , have to travels for so long before they are slaughtered. Why cant we go back to the old days where Mr Cow or Mr Pig was grazing in field - off with his farmer friend - oohh nice bit of grub their - stunned - off for sausages.... and what about the environment - all these heavey trucks for what reason- anyway i digress) but someone said that these are different to the knackerman??

What do they mean?

One is a man, the other a place? I'm not really sure but would guess the knackerman is the guy that takes the horses to the slaughter house. Not 100% but would guess that.

Also not 100% but slaughther house is where horses go for meat (i belive) knackerman is the one that comes and takes a horse away after it has died/been put down and disposes of it (eg by injection so animal cant be used for meat/ to take to the crematorium)

My understanding has always been that knackers yards were the proverbial glue factory, whereas slaughterhouses took animals for their meat.

The 2 slaughterhouses in the UK are the ones fpr production animals i.e. meat.
The knackerman is a very vague term and can mean anything from the local hunt to a personal cremation serivce. Your vet will talk to you about your options when your horse gets PTS.
