So as plans do with horses my original plan of aiming for Houghton CCI 1* in 08 with Dext looks to be unlikely, ive mised about 4 Novice runs this yr and an IN and think it would be a rush/panick/added pressure.

So thought a CIC 1* July time (Knaptoft) and then a CCI 1* later on in the season would be more viable.

Has anyone been to Knaptoft 1*? Whats it like? Whats the ground usually like? (cant find any other CIC's near me at this time

)

Also Weston 1* whats that like? Ground etc or are there better CCI 1* around at the end of the season?

Sorry for all the Q's!!

Weston 1* depends on the ground, i've been when it's rock hard and when it's like a bog tbh. it always runs, barring a major act of god.
courses are lovely, Janet's always are, she does love her skinnies though so make sure yours are spot on.
Knaptoft novice was nice this year, didn't walk the 1* though, not sure how different it was to nov... going was fab though.

I did the CCI* at Weston 2 years ago. It is pretty big but not hugely technical. Ground can be wet but generally holds up well. SJing is big and on a slope and usually quite inflential.

I did Knaptoft this year: the showjumping was v influential as it was technical and well up to height, with only 7 clears out of 45 or so (and that was after the Ground Jury had made them put some down as they were over-height!)
shocked.gif
The cross country was stiff-ish in parts: three offset skinnies early on caused problems, as did the double of corners and the skinny after the water. The ground was very good considering it was one of the hottest days of the year

; they had agravated/aerovated it.

Sounds more technical/bigger then Weston CCI

I know you may not have seen much but do you think Knaptoft was bigger then Houghton 1*?

I don't think so, as a lot were bog standard novice fences. The only one that really had my eyes out on stalks was the double of corners.

We seem to be quite good at corners, so far anyway!!

hopefully shouldnt look to bad after a winter of training and mar-july eventing, we'll see!

Any pics from anyone would be excellent

I think that Weston is on the average side for a one star, for both the cross country and the showjumping. Not big and not small- just in between. The xc looks a little big, but rides extremely well. There are usually one or two horrific skinnies! But when I went they were usually at the end of a seperately numbered combination so if you were way of your line to the skiiny at the end,you could turn and make a bigger circle to represent.

Sounds like Weston could be a possibility then and I think Knaptoft is the only early CIC 1* I can get too, unless anyone can think of another?

Whats the stabling and facilities like at Weston?

From the CCI* i've seen/done i'd say Weston is the biggest chunkiness wise and everythign would be quite wide but not too technical - lots of wide skinnies but if you're straight at them then its fine!!! The SJ is usually big and out of a bog though. Its not a glamorous event in any way and has very little atmosphere but a week in staffordshire mud just seems to be the fun of it all!

Knaptoft CIC* course looked lovely i thought, bang in between a novice and an intermediate with enough questions. Again the SJ was big and techncial. Ground there is often on teh firm side of good - but i'm fussy!

lol stabling and facilities at Weston are basic!!!

No mains hook up, wooden temp stables, cardboard bedding, water miles and miles away, not really much to do - a tent and bar at the stables but its always dark by about 6pm and cold so not many peopel go - used to use the stables bar and restaurant which is part of the house but they've moved the stabling so dont anymore. No more than burger van for catering lol.......but there is something about it which makes it actually great fun. Last year was brill everyone was in such a good mood because it didnt rain. When it rains its becomes a sea of mud!!! You have to waddle through it!

Don't worry, you'll be fine having done Hartpury. I might come and watch, that's how convinced I am that you'll be fine.

Aldon is smaller but more technical and actually i think the intermediate course there is nicer than the CCI* for that reason. Lovely fun event though. The CIC* at Henbury looked nice. Necarne is a lovely event with the jumping and dressage on a good surface, fair XC course. Hartpury isnt that much earlier than those though and you get better facilities, big enough quite technical course. Houghton was "the smallest" of this years CCI*'s

Aldon isnt a lot posher than Weston but you do have the use of the rugby club for showers/ proper toilets. They also do food, have a bar and there's always a small party in there. Plus it's warm and Aldon has a reputation for being cold!

Been told Weston bigger than Hartpury...but I thought Hartpury was fairly decent! Hen made nothing of it though so sure we'll be ok!!!

Have looked at Houghton XC and doesnt seem to worry me its just the SJing, prob am not going to get an int in before Houghton would probably just get some novice runs and an IN in before. oh so complicated! Why cant there be a nice CCI in Sept ish on my doorstep!

We had a CCI* horse at Harptury who had done 5 novices and he went double clear. Mine had only done novices before doing his. Just choose decent novices or an int novice and some newcomers SJ.
