I used to use the Woof lightweight (plastic?) ones. I found that they repeatedly fell to the ground. I had to do them up so tight that I am surprised me horse could move, so I ditched them at that point.
I have also had similar problems in the past (20 odd yrs ago when I was a teenager!). Maybe they have got better since then.
Yes - always hack out in them. Can't remember the make. Got them off ebay for about £2 (secondhand). Made of Neoprene. Had problems with one falling down but got the sewing machine out and replaced the velcro and now brill. Wouldn't go out without them due to such terrible road surfaces.
leather ones are the way forward, have always used them, will always use them... will fall down if put on wrong of it you've got out and get soaked...but generally - they're brilliant
westropp combined brushing and knee boots, quick to put on and do not slip or turn. also have jeffries leather knee boots which are good also. x
i have a clumsy youngster so always wear them at the mo.
Leather ones all the way I am affraid really don't like the others around.
I have some Jefferries ones which are expensive but great, but they were too small for J so a lovely memeber on here found me a pair her saddler had made.
I have some Dever Saddlery black leather ones which i use when hacking out, because Ella trips sometimes. They werent expensive and they are more for peace of mind than anything else. A lady at my yard has those Westropp all-in-one boots and she swears by them.
Both ours always hack out in knee boots, I've seen horrible injuries when horses have stumbled on roads without them on.
We always use leather ones, I believe them to be sturdier than neoprene or plastic. Remember around half a ton or so of horse is landing on them? I think Leather will give more protection. Ebay is as good a place as anywhere to buy from at reasonable prices.....I received a pair of leather this morning from an ebay seller, used but almost new for £10.50 plus a bit of p+p.....magic!
I hack out in old fashioned leather ones, like Jeffries. Horse goes just as well wearing them as without. The old chap's quite trippy, so I don't want him to damage himself should he go down.
