Just wondered who used them?
My youngster will be hacking qiute a bit this year and as he is still green i was thinking of getting him some just in case!
What size does everyone have on what size horse/amount of bone.
Also are the cheap ones worth it? or is it better to spend a bit more?

Hiya

I would always use knee boots when hacking a youngster. I have a pair of leather ones which are lovely, not sure what make as I have borrowed them.

I think any old knee boots would probably be fine though. Just that added piece of mind.

:)

I have Jeffries ones for Hattie. She is a 15.3TB but not a fine one- probably medium build. I have full and cob size for her (both Jeffries) but the cob ones fit better as less left over strap flapping around.

These are the ones I have, the leather is lovely on them but I didn't pay that much for them!!

Thanks everyone
I was thinking of just getting the cheap ones but they didn't seem very wearing and was worried that if on tarmac it would just rip up anyway?

I use the we strop brushing boots with built in knee boots on my mare as she had a nasty fall last year on her knees. I love them as we can still have a canter out on a hack! She is 15hh and I have the cob size.

I have these too. Full size for a TB X fine build, but medium would probably be ok too. They are tough enough to offer good protection if the horse goes down on the road and don't slip even when cantering.

My mare always hacks in knee boots. She has a history of tripping, but thankfully, the times she went down before I bought knee boots, she never did herself much more damage than a graze. I just don't see the point in risking serious injury, and any horse I ever have will hack in knee boots.
I don't know what make they are, but I have the leather and rugging style boots, this is them, although not the clearest picture of them I'm afraid:

I think they are full size but although she is only 14.3hh, she is a cob, and it's more for the length of the bottom strap when used with brushing boots that I have full size.
IMO it is definately worth spending more and getting a decent, sturdier pair. A lot of the neoprene type ones always strike me as being very unprotective, and have a tendency to slip.
My first pair lasted about 5 years, and I only replaced them as they were starting to look a bit tatty, I found a new pair at a very good price, and the leather had started to crack as they had been through the fords quite a lot and i'm not the best at regularly cleaning tack.

would NEVER EVER hack without knee boots, seen to many damaged knees, and they are so so difficult to heal and scar so badly, just not worth it

Agreed, hence why my younger boy wears them as my older boy fell when we were both young and his knees have always been scarred.

I tried my freinds plasticy ones on today, they say full size but they wouldn't fit around his legs! Does anyone know if anywhere does x-full ones.
Think he has 10" of bone so should full size fit? do some makes come up smaller than others?

Try these http://www.rideaway.co.uk/westropp-...utm_medium=shopping&utm_campaign=purenet_feed I use them on my cob who has very hairy legs and a lot of bone. They don't seem as restrictive as the knee boots - we tried the knee ones and they were round her ankles in a short distance!

Vote of confidence for these! I have a pair too and they stay put, don't rub and currently using for turnout with a playful gelding who likes to kick up and has accidentally kicked him in the knee before!!!

I won't hack out without them on any horse, just not worth the risk as the damage can be life threatening. I think the sizes vary hugely though, my HW 15.3 cob has 10 inches of bone and is currently wearing a pony size (!!) leather and suede pair I bought cheaply form my local tack shop, not sure what brand they are though. In the past I had a pair of Jeffries ones which were excellent but they were truly ancient and had been repaired so many times when the stitching went that I got too embarrassed to take them back to the saddler. I would not recommend the neoprene type as everyone I know who has had them finds that they slip off, and I don't like the skeleton type without the bottom strap either as they can flip up when the horse falls and so may as well not be wearing them. I've done everything in my leather ones including cantering, jumping and long trec rides without any probs, just keep them well oiled and clean.
