Anyone ride in one, if so why do you need to, and what sort do you have?

I had an arthroscopy in March, and whilst the superficial healing was very quick, I think that deep inside it's either slow to heal or maybe the problem has not been cured. I have another hospital appointment later this month (first since op, have been seeing physio though) and my concern is that they will tell me something ridiculous like 'give up riding'!

Well OBVIOUSLY I won't be doing that, I'm already down to riding once a fortnight in an attempt to not overdo it! But I do want to support my knee as much as possible, so opinions/views on knee braces would be very welcome. I do already have the basic neoprene one, also the velcro with knee hole cut out and lots of magnets, I guess I'm thinking more bionic knee for the next one!

I have one that has metal inserts within neoprene and prevents my knee from moving sideways (I damaged my ACL over 10 years ago). I wore it for riding once and it was too uncomfortable. It was great for skiing though!

My doctors actually did tell me to give up riding but I never listened anyway.

Depending on what the surgeon actually found really depends on the sort of brace that will be suitable for you. When you go to physio ask them about braces as they will be able to look in the phsio-med book at all the choices. I gave up Physio 5yrs ago and also ride in a brace as I tore my medial ligament, cruciate ligament and cartilage in a skiing accident 9yrs ago but still have problems with it - also had surgery on it! I use a strong running brace for riding just for extra support but it sometimes rubs at the back of the knee.

Instead of restricting yourself to once a fortnight, can you do little and often to get goign again?
OH found a support over breeches was more comfortable, and a pair of those stirrup irons with springy sides made trotting more comfy.

Thanks everyone. LCobby, I've already got the springy side irons, and I only ride for 20 minutes. The physio says I should ride less, but less means taking his shoes off and turning him away indefinitely I reckon!

I've got one with a metal hinge either side from when I dislocated my knee and damaged ACL - was about £70 I think and was a godsend - wore it permanently when up for a couple of weeks and a further 6 when riding
