Hello

Does anyone have experience of a similar injury or treating for long-term pain relief?

I have 11yo approx lurcher who is otherwise fit and well. In July he jumped out of an upstairs window and subsequently fractured his knee. This was missed by the vet on the xrays (concluded extensive soft tissue damage) and not noticed until I took the dog and xrays to see a hydro-therapist in the September.

He was operated on in September (at reduced cost and by a different vet I may add) and has undergone a period of controlled exercise since. Its been 1 step forward 3 steps back the entire time with him having a few good days with real improvement before almost looking as bad as he did before the op. At the moment hes in a "good period", notable lame but weight bearing on it well. On bad days his weight bearing on it is minimal. He's a stupid sort of dog as in he seems almost oblivious to the fact and bounces around on 3 legs quite happily. He's very stoic though and I suspect still in a fair bit of discomfort.

Where do I go from here? He's been back and forth to the vets several times for more painkillers. He remains on Metacam 30ml and 200mg of tramadol a day. Occasionally I've ran out of Tramadol and cant say I've noticed any difference with him when I did. I plan to re start hydro in the new year.

Is there any different meds available that may help him more? Are joint supplements worth looking at? I've asked the vets about steroids and they don't think the joint will cope with it. At his age he wouldn't cope having his amputated. I'm not really worried about med side effects on liver, kidney's tbh given his age. He's too well and happy to be put down.
