Horse on our yard went down on his knees on Sunday - he went down quite hard, on tarmac. He has broken the skin on both and there is a skinned / raw patch the size of a 50p piece on one.
Owner washed and dressed the wound when he did it and rode the following day. Said he was not lame.
When I asked after him last night, owner said that his knees are swollen and there is heat in them, 'but he's not lame'. He is turned out all day.
I personally think owner should be calling the vet, even though he's not lame, because it sounds as though there is infection starting to brew in there. If it was my horse, I'd be calling the vet.
I've not had any personal experience with knee injuries (thank heavens) but have heard that even quite small amounts of trauma to the knees can be quite serious. How easy are they to damage, and if this was your horse would you be calling the vet?
I'm just wondering whether I should be 'strongly suggesting' the owner calls the vet - but I don't want to alarm them unduly. I'm not convinced the owner necessarily has the knowledge to make the decision themselves (sorry, I know that sounds really patronising - I don't mean to).
