Hi - my 21 year old gelding has little synovial fluid left in his knee joints and our vet is going to try injecting them to see if that helps. Has anyone had this done to their horse and what is the procedure, results good or bad experiences would be helpful. It will be discussed more fully with me next week but I'd prefer to know a bit more in advance and also the cost.

got a gelding with bony changes in one knee - he's just had his knee medicated and is now sound on it.

He was 3-4/10 lame prior to the injection. We'll have to see how long it lasts - quoted anything from 6 months to 2 years, depending on how fast the bone continues to change and on his workload too.

Obviously a risk penetrating a joint, but it was all very sterile and quick so seems to have gone ok

Haven't had the bill yet, but was quoted approx £100 for doing it

He was injected last Monday - had 3 days of 2 bute (one morning, one evening) and stood in while the bute got into his system.

then he walked in hand in the school for a couple of days, until he looked sound ie the injection had spread through the joint

and then started walking out this Monday - he's now hacking as normal (approx 45 mins round the block) and is quite perky!

Whats the name of the injection? As mine got some injection into his foot for a chipped bone and was wondering if it may be the same injection lol

it was a cortisone injection - the cheapest option

the plan is, that if it worked, when it wears off, he will have another injection - this time with cortisone and Hyaluronic Acid combined - a more expensive option, but longer lasting :)

yes actually i think thats the injection mine got (for some reason anticostel (sp) injection keeps popping into my head lol) ... mine got it for a chipped navicular bone, he got it last September.
