Hi all I'm going in for a cartilage trim and more importantly a acl reconstruction (cruciate ligament). Anyone had one and how long before doing stuff re walking driving riding. Please be gentle with the horror I'm really frightened. Thanks.

Hm, I have not had any reconstruction but I had a cartilage trim and a cyst drained from within my knee. The cruciate ligament thing may mean you are off for a while though but it depends on the severit - did you snap it? I would imagine you would have to rest uo a bit if that's the case - a friend of mine snapped hers skiing and it took a good long while for her to be right again but she was walking with a brace - not sure how long that was after the op though. Sorry, not very helpful really! Usually with knee ops being that it's keyhole they have you walking straight away with crutches for a bit but i was walking normally within a week and riding not long after.

Hi there, I've had it done, after years of hammering the weary legs around a netball pitch!!!! Need the other one doing as well but have decided to pack in the netball, it was easier!
Basically I was on crutches for approx 6/8 weeks after the op, I had a new cruciate which they make from pulling part of your hamstring down and through the knee.....nice! tidy up of cartliage and knee cap re-alignment, the physio is superb afterwards and they will give you loads of exercises, particularly exercise bike so if you have one then that's good, I got one for £20 of Ebay.
The crutches are the main problem really and it depends on your surgeon/physio as to how quickly you come off them, I also had medial collateral ligament damage so it maybe you get off them sooner.
I did manage to ride, albeit with a brace on my leg, which they will probably give you and I would only have done it on my horse and nothing else, but if you saw me trying to get off you would have been on the floor!!!!! Had to stand next to super high mounting block and pray that i didn't miss!!!
They will let you out of hospital once you can do the `stairs test' but all in all they get you up and running as soon as possible....no pun intended!
It's now 3 years since I've had mine done and I haven't looked back (touches wood) no more knee collapsing at the slightest uneven ground or twist and turn and I have been known to do little jog every now and then!!!!!!
Good luck with it and I'm sure you will be fine, hope the above helps, sorry bit long:D
