Hi everyone,
I suffer with sore knees regularly. I’m only 22 and I’m crippled after riding! Does anyone use anything to help with knee pain? Either exercises or equipment for riding? I’ve tried different stirrups and the only ones that seem to make a difference are cheap compositi stirrups. I ride daily and this is becoming a problem!

I find riding with slightly longer stirrups takes the pressure off a bit, I also have some knee supports for when mine get bad but mine are usually worse when it is cold.

Does anyone use knee supports? Do you find a difference?

I use them all the time for riding now, but I had an accident a while ago causing bone damage which they are still not fully healed from. Before that they were already a bit gimpy but I got on fine using flex /compositi stirrups. Metal stirrups are a no go! I have been getting off onto a haylege bale too I think a higher/softer landing saves some wear and tear on them.

I second that you need to see a doctor. I’ve had multiple surgeries on one knee and I found the only stirrups that helped massively were flexi stirrups (the ones with the rubber coated chain links on the outsides).

Yes I use two supports otherwise my knees click and get quite sore after riding, can’t ride for too long these days but I am 70 so to be expected I guess I also use sprenger flex stirrups and they help too. I find slightly longer stirrups better and don’t do too much trotting.

Do you wear the soles of your footwear out on one side or the other? Go and see a good podiatrist, or go to a specialist footwear sports shop, such as for runners, and get a gait analysis done. You might need orthotics to adjust your gait which affects your knees and hips. I can recommend a couple of places in the Midlands.

I had this same issue too and I'm in my 20s. I ride slightly longer and use the Compositi stirrups. I don't get this issue anymore so not sure if something has changed in the joint over the years or if that has helped. My ankles are the issue now lol!

OP, go and get yourself checked out, so that know what the actual problem is. I was in my 20s when it all started and I used to use knee supports and for me, this was one of the issues, they compressed my kneecaps, so that my shin and thigh bones were effectively wearing the back of my kneecaps away.

I was left in a huge amount of pain and hobbling around, I was forced to take a long break from riding. Having had multiple surgeries over the years to resurface the back of my kneecaps and sort out scar tissue issues, I would not recommend anyone to wear knee supports without understanding the underlying issue first.

Once you know the issue, then you can fix it while you don’t have further damage.

Once you know what the problem is, I would second getting some shock absorbing stirrups. I have a reconstructed ACL and my Flex-ons make a huge difference.

I would say doctor as soon as possible as well. Following that a physio visit might be useful, tight hamstrings and muscle imbalance etc. can affect knees. I have had knee problems previously, had an op, but physio recommended exercises really helped as well.

I use the cheap composite stirrups too to help with my dodgy knee and hip. Have definitely found they help.

Two other things I do;

Devils Claw tablets daily.

Work on keeping my leg soft when riding. Jamming my heel down or grabbing with my knee both cause tension and make things hurt.

I would second this. It may be solvable with physio. You don’t want to become reliable on knee supports or tape when a bit of strengthening was all that was needed… equally you don’t want to mask a bigger problem
