Hi, has anyone had (or know someone who has had) a knee replacement who has continued riding afterwards? How long was the recovery? How did they find riding afterwards? I don't jump much, but do dressage so need to be able to do lateral work. Also like a fast hack. I am only 42 and fit and well apart from this blimen knee! Any info appreciated.

Yep lovely lady on my yard is just back in the saddle after being given the all clear by her doctor. She's more of a happy hacker but is already going out for about an hour - building up slowly while doing physio and exercises. She doesn't seem to be in any discomfort while riding and sounds like long term it shouldn't cause her any issues with riding. Jumping or cross country mighty be different to flatworm though?

That is interesting and encouraging. I am imagining the worst so am thinking I won't be able to ride as well afterwards. Am also put off by the long recovery time. Might have to try and last until next winter 😄

there was a lady on my old yard who had had a knee replacement as a 19ish year old (she's 35ish now) and rides regularly with no problems

I've had both knees replaced and although I don't ride much now it's not because of the knees. It's really important to be as fit as possible before surgery and to have your quads strong. Really work at the rehab programme and you will be back in the saddle before you know it! I'm 67 and don't notice the knees are replacement!

Wow! That is really encouraging. The Surgeon says I'm a bit young to have it replaced yet(I did ask him to repeat it!) so need to really get stuck into getting my weight down and strengthening my quads to stave it off as long as possible. Thanks for your comments.

I had my right knee totally replaced seven years ago at 50. It was done on Dec 3rd I think and I was driving before the Christmas and riding again at six weeks post op. (Fell off twice on my first ride - loose girth and a bog -and I was by myself!) The knee is heavy so getting on is not very elegant, I have to sort of swing forward to get the momentum to get my right leg over the saddle but once on I'm fine. The lack of chronic pain is just wonderful. I have as much bend as my leg will physically go, restrained only by the actual plastic and metal bits.

my lower leg is more stable than before as it is stronger and I would thoroughly recommend the operation!
It's a bit painful for a few days but that is the actual operation - the long term grinding chronic pain was gone when I came round from the op. They did it with an epidural and I was sat up drinking tea within three hours of drifting off.
I had a spinal fusion 18 months ago which was also successful and am riding as much as before but I don't deliberately set out to jump now! ( Too much metal)
My Consultant has a photo of me galloping through a water splash on his board to show people....
Good luck.
