Was watching Freckles today, she was out loose and decided to stand in front of the house for a nap....

as she was nodding off, her head was getting lower and lower until her nose was about 2-3 inches off the floor, then her knees would buckle and jolt her awake.... she did it quite a few times..

shes heavily pregnant now, only a month to go, (and looks huge) and I have to say she looks very tired and fed up and has gone very affectionate, and when Im doing the stable for the mare and foal, stands there wanting to go in it.

Ive had a google and some say its because they are not laying down and are over tired..(she looks knackered)

anyone else had this??

I am going to bring her in at night in a few days, as its warm enough at night now for the foal to say out all night....and I know she will lay down in the stable.. (ive only got one stable)

xx

My old girl does it when she lives out during the summer months - she has arthritis in her knees and can only lie out flat, but seemingly doesn't like to do that in the field, only in her stable. On hot days, especially if I am there which seems to make her even more sleepy, she can sink so low her nose is resting on the ground, and her back legs start to go sideways like a collapsing tent! She has fallen down forwards as a result, but usually rouses herself in the nick of time. I expect your girl finds getting up difficult as she is now so big, so just isn't getting so much sleep as she might.

Fatpiggy - Does your mare have difficulty getting up after lying down out of interest? We had a pony here with arthritic knees who could only lie flat out for the same reason, but she had difficulty getting to her feet again as she had to get into a reclining position to do so. She seemed to get tired, but when she went down for a roll would take some time out & lay flat for 10 mins as she never layed down to sleep.

In answer to the OP, I expect she's just very tired. I had a narcoleptic TB who would do the same. He rarely layed down in the field as he was always on self imposed 'guard duty'.

Hiya..

no she never has a problem getting up and down and I did see her get down to roll today...

shes started to bag up now, so another couple of weeks I think, I have a feeling this one is going to be early, unlike the first foal that was late... (though saying that her son Harley has always been a little slow...haha)

When I bought her in to foal the first time (this is her 2nd and last foal) she would come in at night and sleep for 2 hours solid! and more then once a night... guess she likes her kip...
