With all the respect to our para dressage riders and their magnificent achievements at London 2012 I felt it was inappropriate for Lee Pearson to complain publically for not being chosen to receive a knighthood this year. After reading an endless list of very negative and often furious comments from horsy and non horsy people about it on Yahoo news page I felt rather embarrassed for Lee Pearson and disappointed.

I expected such a comment he's been on and on about it since before the Olympics, as I read all the horse people awards I said uh oh Lee's not there! I was never sure whether he's being tongue in cheek or genuinely demanding he should have it!

Lee Pearson is rather good at complaining. He also has a huge opinion of himself. Which is a shame as it overshadows his achievements.

He may be outspoken about it and it is off putting but I do agree with him.
He has won 10 gold medals and has received little recognition for being one of the greatest para-Olympians ever. Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson won 11 gold medals in her career and Lee isn't retiring yet so hopefully he will beat her record.
I do wish others would campaign on his behalf so he doesn't have to, and then recieve bad press for complaining.

He may deserve it but isn't it just general manners to be humble about it instead of publicly complaining? Moaning about it gets you nowhere, it just makes him sound bitter and less deserving which is a shame.

He shouldn't be doing it for the recognition or awards, it should be for the love of the sport etc rather than fame or status.

i agree with this
he is a little embarrassingly wingey about it but it doesn't seem right that he didn't get it

Agree with crimbowitch, he won't stop moaning until he's acknowledged as king of England, the pope and god all rolled into one.

Maybe the queen has been keeping up with the sport news and won't be knighting him til he behaves in a more modest fashion. I don't think the queen is a fan of whinging and immodesty!

He is a whinging so and so - like someone said, whatever he got he wouldn't be happy. I don't actually think sportspersons should get knighthoods - MBEs yes but not knighthoods

Who knows... maybe he wouldn't have whinged if he had been recognised in the early days...we'll never know now.
I have heard what he has said and I can't help feeling a bit sorry that he wasn't recognised in the first place, he has won god knows how many other awards besides his gold medals and the sporting news hardly ever mentioned him.
I agree it could be that the queen doesn't like him being so vocal about it.

I agree with gemin1eye why should sports people get awarded for doing what they love, that means that all of us on here equally deserve an award. I do think however that lots of kids grass roots trainers that do things and run clubs for little or no reward are really the people that deserve to be noticed for their services to their sport.

But what else???

Dont you have to make some sort of positive contribution to society to receive honours.

I dont know anything about the guy, perhaps that says it all

Your last sentence says it all, the press have hardly covered anything he has done. I had to look up in Wikepedia before I realised all that he had won.

Lovely man who has worked extremely hard to achieve amazing results. Staunch supporter of 2 children's charities that I know of too.

I so agree with this. Honours should be given for making a difference to society. Actors/entertainers seem to get them if they hang around long enough. Give them to the deserving.

I couldn't give a monkeys how many medals he's won, he's an embarassment and I have no respect for him.

I also object on principle to sportsmen and entertainers getting knighthoods.

Not wishing to aim this at any one sportsperson but more as a general statement. But, surely achieving an Olympic gold medal in your chosen sport is the ultimate reward and proof to yourself and others that you are one of the elite athlete in the world. So why would you need anything else to say you are the best?

the headline about that in the Telegraph was terrific and possilby explains the reasoning. It was something along the lines of "Cherie Blair beats husband to get award":D So now you know:D:D:D:D
