:o hello knowledgeable racing people

I often like to spend afternoon's watching the racing on Channel 4 and I through this have picked up various bits of knowledge. One thing I have always wondered about though is how they decide in which order to load the runners into the stalls? Is it an advantage to have your runner loaded last just before they jump off? In big fields is it a disadvantage to have your runner loaded early and waiting around. Also, those that load with hoods on that are pulled off at the last minute, are they not at a disadvantage? O mean if you blindfolded me, walked me round for a bit so I was disoriented and then told me to run I'm not sure I would be at my best..

On a separate note, the handlers down at the start are great aren't they? Such calm handling!

There are many variables to your questions, lots are drawn on the order of entering the stalls but exceptions are made for horses that need to go in early or late....they try to be as accommadating as possible as speed is the crucial factor. As for the hoods, they need to come off last thing as they are on horses that might play up and it doesn't seem to affect their reaction times, I guess they get used to it....and yes, the stalls handlers are great, a lot of one horse owners could learn from watching them at work ! No messing around, just get on with it !

Thank you :) would you say there is an advantage to loading last then? I can't think of a disadvantage to loading late but I think there are a few to loading early
