A waterford is mainly used for a horse that leans on the bit to gain control - the links prevent the horse grabbing hold of the bit.
It can be strong especially if used with a 'sawing' action.
Hope that helps!

A waterford is classed as a fairly severe bit. It wraps around the lower jaw and the horse can't 'defend' itself against it (hence being good for those who pull/ignore the bit). I would think it's probably be fairly comfortable bit for them to hold in their mouth when there's no pressue on it but the bobbles on the bit are fairly anglar so quite severe with pressue on the reins.

If someone's chosen to use a waterford (assuming they know what they're doing) I'd guess the horse has stopping issues.
