My 11 year old lab who is or was 100 fit and healthy with no stiffness behind (think 3 year old dog). Yesterday she went out for her run and had a day around the house then in the evening just could not get up she had lost the use of her back end :(
She is in spain living with my father. The vets were closed so he managed to put her to bed. When he woke up she was standing but walking very cautiously and very very quiet. He is taking her to vets first thing monday when they open.
Anyone any experiences? Sadly im thinking maybe a stroke? If so what is the out come?
Im heartbroken as this dog means the world to me and we have been through all sorts including the death of my mother. I cannot bear the thought of this especially as she is obly just 11 and so so fit and healthy until yesterday :( :(
Thanks for your help xx

Could be many things - slipped disc springs to mind though if she was running about? I am sure the vets will be able to shed more light. Hope she's ok :-)

It sounds like a slipped disc to me. Your vet needs to do an MRI to correctly diagnose this and then you have the option of an operation which usually has good results (do go to a specialist vet though if it is a disc problem). If the dog is completely immobile you must take her to a vet for treatment in the first 48 hours, but if she is improving just get her to a vet as soon as you can.

Hi everyone thanks for your kind messages.
My dad said this morning she was back to her usual bouncy self. She jumped inthe car as usual for an outing!
The vet xrayed her back legs and said it is athritis. She has given her an injection and some pills to take daily. She says when these incidents occur she will need to go have an injection.
So good news however the drug is rimadyl which hasnt got overly good press. Anyone experienced this?

Not sure where your father lives, but would strongly recommend he seeks alternative advice and medication. Rimadyl is not a good long term medication. Chris Day (Oxfordshire area) Richard Allport or other homeopathic vets will be able to help.

Maybe mention Trocoxil which is taken long term and doesn't have such obvious effects. Saying that, my vet reckons you'd notice an issue with rimadyl and she'd need to be on it forever for it to be a massive problem.

My older boy has an arthritic foot and has a rimadyl when needed. After an initial course and some Trocoxil, he seems fine now, we just keep his weight down and monitor exercise. He's not allowed to jump out of the car and we do lots of swimming to lower the impact on the foot.

My lab was a rimadyl for quite a while he did fine we also used Metacam he's progressed to steriods with temalesic his arthritis caused the hind leg loss you talk about he's thirteen and a half now and will not be here much longer but until April he was doing pretty well , you will still have time with yours .
