I am thinking of getting a black lab puppy. I have had dogs in the past but they have always been rescues. I would really like a puppy this time. I have been thinking long and hard and I would like a black lab, a sporty long legged type.

Does anyone know the best place to get such a dog? Am I being too fussy? Should I go straight to a reputable breeder? Can you find out who are reputable breeders? I am in no hurry and can wait for the right dog.

If you want a puppy, a reputable breeder is the place to go:) The KC list of registered breeders is a starting point, then I'd ask around with a shortlist, also there is a specialist labrador forum that might be a good source of info.

Health tests wise - hips, eyes and elbows all need doing.

IME a reputable breeder will be picky about where their puppies go - be suspicious of anyone that's ready to hand them over too easily! Go to meet the breeder, get a feel of the place, are the dogs happy, healthy etc.

The longer legged types tend to be more working strains I think. Show types tend to be the shorter legged ones. Personally I would be looking for a mixed breeder - ie one that breeds dogs from both working and show lines. They are still about:)

The chap I go beating with has just had a litter of yellows - not sure how set on blacks you are? Just thought i'd mention it as he's based in Cambs and they're working lines.

Working labs are definitely longer legged - I know as I have one!! They also have a lot more energy and have a far greater work ethic than 'show' types. I got mine as a 16 month old from The Labrador Rescue Trust - he was a £650 puppy whose parents were field trials champions. So don't rule out 'older' labradors form the LRT.

I know you didn't ask but here is a gratuitous piccy of the Moo so you can see his long legs.........

My black lab bitch is in pup at the moment hopefully. PM if you want details. I dnt want to look as if im advertising but as im a vet nurse everything has been done and both parents have longer legs.

We have just bought an 8 week old Black Labrador Bitch. :) I will pm you the info on the breeder if you like. She is very well bred and has excellent hip scores. I think it is important to buy from a reputable breeder as you can then be assured the puppy has been bred correctly and common problems (eg hip dysplasia) have been minimised. You can also be sure the puppy hasn't been inbred and the temperaments of the parents have been carefully chosen.

I work with a gentleman who breeds labs.
They are Sretlaw Labradors - they have a website you can google them.
I believe they have a bitch in pup now but whether any will be black I'm not sure!!!!!!
PM me if you want any contact numbers etc.

As others have stated, if you want the longer leg lab you will need to look for a working bred dog but be aware these are totally different to the show/pet types and need a lot more work/exercise/mental stimulation. They will not be happy with a 20 minute dander around the park! :p

With labs, you want ones that have been both hip and elbow scored as well as the eye checks, elbow issues are becoming more apparent in labradors unfortunately.

If you chose to go for the worknig type, look in local gun shops, country sport shops etc and you will often see them advertied. Sporting Gun etc will have adverts for them.

God luck with your seach, I found my last lab bitch quite by accident! I have a black lab and a yellow one :D

My sister in law and I both breed, I have the stud dog and she has the bitches - KC reg breeders. My black boy covered her yellow bitch in May, she is due end of June. His hips are 0/0 and hers 3/4, both clear eyes. My boy is a working dog and is very long legged, the bitch is also from working stock. Both have excellent pedigrees with many F/T champs. PM me if you're interested, she is based in Norfolk.
