I'm struggling with no motivation to do anything with my horse(s) at the moment, I just feel like giving up. There's nothing wrong with them but I do have 4 when I should only really have 1 - 2 are mums, 1 is my niece and 1 is mine, family problems have meant I'm now looking after 4 and I just don't want to, I don't even want mine atm cos she just feels like a big tie, I want to move out but the only way I can see to do that would be a live in, keep your own horse job and I've already done that. I don't really want to get rid of mine but I'm just fed up with it all...... help?

I also have four, would like to have two, and won't ever go through another winter with the four I presently have: at least one has to go. It's just too much work to properly care for that number of horses for one person. Affirmative action is the only way to go.

I don't know what the family problems are, but your mum and your niece both took on horses knowing the responsibility involved - it's fine to help out when you can, but you shouldn't ever be made to feel that it's too much to cope with, and it clearly is from your post. I think you need to have a chat to both of them and explain they need to make other arrangements - whether it's a loan or a share if they can't take the horses back or do the daily care themselves, or even sell them.

In your shoes I'd also take on a sharer for mine to take some of the pressure off, and really focus on getting a job that means you can move out.

In theory you only have responsibility for one horse, in your situation I would tell your mum and niece that as from such and such a date you won't be involved in any day to day care of their horses. I too had four horses until recently, one has sold and I still have one for sale, two is an ideal number!
