I am now 50 yrs old and I was just wondering how many more years I am likely to be able to safely (Horse permitting) enjoy a good active hunt with jumps. How old is the oldest Lady hunter you know of? :p

The lady and her husband that I ride for are over 50 and still hunt twice a week.

There are others that I would guess at well over 50 years that I go out with who hunt every week religiously!

I think only you can decide if you are safe enough :D

I know of a lady who is 83 and her husband who is 86 who still ride regularly - they are both horse owners.
A couple of years ago I asked them if they still hunt - her reply: 'Oh yes, but we don't really jump anymore - well maybe just the odd one or two' - how fab is that?!

There is a lady called Virginia who hunts with the South Dorset and she is ancient and she still jumps everything - quite terrifying.

There is also a gentleman (I call him that because he really is a gentleman) called Noel Pegge who must be in his early 90's who hunts with the Cottesmore & Quorn (or did until I left 3 years ago) and he still jumped everything and was immactulately turned out. He'd been hunting since the age dot and at the time had been to 60 Quorn opening meets at least.

There is a lady who hunts with the Heythrop called Lorna Schuster(sp?) And Iam sure she is about 90. She rides a lemon coloured cob such an amazing lady.

It is more of a gentle hack out for her these days, and she always has an escort - but good on her for still going out. There is an elderly chap in the same field with an artificial leg, I understand.

50 is no age at all

^ I read about the man with the artificial leg in H&H a few years ago - I remember he said his horse at the time really looked after him and 'righted' him when he could feel his weight slipping too far to one side!

I think our oldest lady hunter is in her 70s!
Our oldest man is 88, but he only does an hour on the really quiet days, non jumping.

A wonderful young lady in her 80s hunts regularly with ours, on a large and lively horse I certainly wouldn't ride!

Long ago I hunted with Mr Goschen's hounds in Hampshire, Mrs Goschen was Field Master, out all day, twice a week, and jumping gates well into her late 80s!

50 is the new 25. The best is yet to come!

I'm glad there are plenty of older people who hunt - which is just as well because last season I hunted for the first time and I am 53. I sincerely hope I've got a good few years yet, because I have now got the bug!

Thank you!, Thank you! Thank you! I am so pleased to hear I am not even nearly over the hill!. :p I first hunted in 1977 and the next time was 2007. Same meet! I had a few comments on the first hunt such as "We'll see you again in 30 years perhaps" I only go on 4 or 5 per season, but after not having riden for 25 years I had to build up my confidence again, especially jumping, but now I have I want to make the most of it. Thank you all once again. (A1Alfie, I don't think I've ever been an inspiration before, but thank you so much).

I also hunted with Mr Goschen's Hounds, I remember the Citroen 2CV and Mrs Goshen (she wasn't on a steady cob either!).
At 50 you've got years yet!

Hopefully, for as long as you are physically able to do so. Lots of wonderful people still hunting in their 80s - so you are but a spring chook in that respect. I am heading for my 53rd Opening Meet. I obviously do not sit on the sort of (mad) conveyances I did when I was in my 20s but I still like to ride a quality horse, jump and keep up with hounds. You keep going dear lady - and enjoy yourself.
