Lambing had started in the hills

Gorgeous pictures, thankyou for sharing.
Can I ask some silly questions please? Why is the lamb in the bag, and why the pen for the two of them, is it so they can be checked? (Asking out of genuine curiosity as I know nothing about sheep/lambing, hope that's ok)

At a guess the ewe had decided that motherhood wasn't her thing and had fecked off leaving her lamb behind. The bag would contain the lamb safely until the ewe could be caught and penned up to rediscover her maternal instincts.

Almost right.

The lamb had a difficult delivery and had to be helped into the world. Our hill sheep are what you might call a bit wild/stark raving mad, so any human interference has the ewe running as far and as fast away from the action as she can. Dog drives the ewe down to the wee pen that has already been set up in the field for such an event, lamb popped in the bag for safe keeping so the two can be reunited. She actually does want her lamb and so they were given some time to reacquaint before being released again a little later.

We have sheep like that too ? and tend to use a Gambrel restrainer to hold the ewe with her lamb til she has started to lick it and talk to it. It's usually safe to release her at that point but it's bad enough having a runner in an enclosed field let alone out on the hill!
