right had my boy shod on friday and farrier made him bleed, said this has only happened to him once before. He'd cut away the same amount of hoof as he normally does but something must have changed, maybe a blood vessel has grown there he said. He seared it with a hot shoe, there wasnt much blood anyway just a trickle. Farrier said to watch him as he might be abit footy, well today he is dog lame :( no heat in the leg. what do you think I should do and how should I treat it, should I call vets or farrier

Both! No farrier should ever make a pony lame never mind make it bleed! Hope you get it sorted, meanwhile keep the pony in and keep comfortable on a deep bed

It has been known to happen completely innocently. You can (very rarely) get a blood vessel that comes through to the sole area. It may not have been the farrier's fault as you can't predict that.
However - dog lame needs vet.
Treat as abscess for now and get vet tomorrow.

where was the bleeding from exactly?

and agree dog lame = call the vet

The blood vessel in the wrong place comment is laughable!!! He's pricked her corium with a nail being in too close - simple as that. Hopefully with brand new clean nails, the chance of infection is very low. He needs to know the horse is lame, tell him.

the hoof only bled a tiny amount after hed took the old shoe off and cut the toe away, Iv used this farrier for 12 years and he's very experienced so have no reason to doubt what he says?? He said he cut the same amount as he always does but something has changed in the foot since last time possibly a blood vessel. Shoe is off and foot poulticed so will see how ponio is in the morning

He bled the smallest amount after he'd trimmed the hoof right on his toe he seared it with a hot shoe. It looks fine absolutley nothing when he's took the shoe off today

I am sure that you really know what to do, but would like to hear others reinforce your thoughts.
I would get your vet and farrier to the horse ASAP. I say get both vet and farrier for 2 main reasons
1) The vet would much rather the farrier took the shoe off. 2) In order to get a satisfactory conclusion it is good to have both parties there to work on the treatment

As a referral farrier I get called in too many times to look at horses with the vet present, but when I ask if the farrier will be joining us it is often met with a negative answer, as they are often afraid it will offend.
If a farrier has done something that they may regret, they must be made aware of the problem.
And before everyone shoots off with how bad your case is.
Lets take a totally hypothetical situation where a keratoma has prolapsed into the sola void and when trimming the area blood was seen to seep. This would be unexpended and would be acted on by the vet. All be it that it was the farrier that discovered it.
I am not for one moment saying that your horse has a keratoma, what I am pointing out is that it is very easy to jump to one conclusion when it might not be the right one.
I will add however that now my work is 99.99999% barefoot I do not come across any referrals or clients that have this or a similar problem.
Get the team in ASAP Good luck

Well done for getting him back, and nice to hear that he came on a Sunday = he cares. These things happen to the best farriers occasionally (nail pricks) and are usually quickly overcome. I hope your horse is the same.

moorman - I have been trying to find where I read that a blood vessel can come to the surface....I am sure I read it somewhere but I can't find it now :(

Is it true - or have I imagined it?

In my experience it often can arise in areas of ruptured capillaries ( as in laminitis) these of course do not have a viable connection to the vascular process.
I only have seen it with an independent blood supply in cases of tumours , sarcoids or proud flesh

It could be I am thinking about the former then, where there wouldn't be a fresh stream of blood, rather just red staining.

Thanks for that
