My warmblood is forever pulling shoes in field lunging or when ridden, he is a nightmare. He has never been lame after pulling one off in the 5 years i have owned him. Today however, he has been in the field for two hours, noone has seen him running arould and he has pulled a shoe and is hoping lame. No signs of bruising or pain on the sole of his foot and he has pulled it clean off, taking no foot. Am I within my rights to be thinking the worse?? Rang farrier, waiting for return call.

Id wait until the shoe gets put back on until you fear the worst!

Personally i would bring him in, cold hose his two front legs then bandage them up. Then repeat tonight - as in take bandages off, walk him out, cold hose, re bandage. Id keep repeating this until the shoe goes back on. If possible id walk him in your arena rather than on hard ground for about 15mins morning and evening (and lunch time if possible) whilst repeating the cold hosing and rebandaging each time.

Archie goes lame after pulling a shoe, but as soon as it goes back on hes always been sound again.

Not surprised if he is lame after pulling a shoe this time of year. Feet get soft after all the moisture in April and May, Ryan's are very soft at the moment and losing a shoe can easily mean bruised soles just by treading on a sharp stone in the field without you being able to see anything. I know why you are worried, but am sure he is just a little foot sore and will be right as rain once the shoe goes back on. He is fit and healthy and you have been so careful with him I am sure it is a minor setback, if he doesn't have any swelling or visible signs of injury he may just have tweaked himself, maybe get the physio to give him a once over once the shoe goes back on to check for pulled muscles????

I wouldn't panic. A horse we have on the yard who is waiting to be vetted pulled her shoe off 3 weeks ago on the day of the vetting- 3 weeks on and she is still lame- luckily the purchasers are patient!
