My horse was shod on weds, then not ridden until Friday. My son was riding him and as we trotted up a hill I noticed the horse was lame. He appeared sound in walk but at least 3/4 10th's lame in trot.

I have spoken to my farrier today who is coming back first thing on Monday morning to have a look - is it better to have the horse on box rest until then or turn out?

He doesn't like being in 24/7 especially as the others are all out, and the field is still a little soft with good grass cover.

However if it is not a simple case of nail bind, and something more serious is it safe to turn out? He is a quiet lad in the field and not the type to hooley about.

What would you do if it was your horse?

Thanks in advance!

If he's happier in field then leave him out. Epecially if he's not the type to hooly around. He might cause more harm to himself in a stable in his case. If it were me I would turn out in a section of the field that's reasonably small just to make sure he can't gallop around If this is possible? I should think if you had the farrier only a couple of days ago I should think its a tight nail. My friend has had the same situation this week too.

Thanks, your response was reassuring and what I was hoping for!

I will put him out in a small paddock next to his friends until Mon, and keep fingers crossed that it is just a farrier issue.
