I asked the YO to get the back lady to look at Jazzy when she was next on the yard. I didn't think there was anything wrong with his back, but better be safe than sorry. Last time he was checked she said his pelvis was slightly out so I need to keep an eye on it.

I also asked YO to ask saddler to check saddle fit as was thinking it was a bit tight. However, YO checked it on Saturday and said it was fine and for me to stop being over-protective!! Saddler coming out next Tuesday though.

YO phones me to let me know back lady says not much wrong with his back but he's lame in the front and the back. She recommends a vet visit.

Jazzy trips quite badly (generally with his off-fore leg) but when I rode him on Saturday (after having 2 weeks off to de-muscle again!) he felt fine - not lame and wasn't tripping quite so much.

He power walked all the way round a 3 mile ride (which he is more than capable of doing) with a very small amount of trotting.

Does anyone have any ideas what might cause front and back lameness (I've not seen him yet - will go tomorrow, so I don't know HOW lame is lame), what vets might ask for and how much it's likely to cost (some confusion over payment for insurance with owner so OH and I will pay for whatever he needs).

Many thanks for reading and for any replies xxx

There can be many causes Eriskayowner.
Trauma ( like running over a chain harrow or through solid brush etc) , laminitis, disease ,could be anything .
Until you have seen for yourself, it would be difficult to guess.

A history would be useful for the vet, as well as digital pulses , if there is heat and where.
No idea about costs, sorry.

Hope it is nothing too serious.

Thanks Teg!

I know that he's a bit wonky anyway (had a fall whilst being loose schooled years ago which damaged his back and pelvis) but the back lady is happy with his back.

I need to have a look at him but YO is pretty good and if she says vet then I'm assuming it'll be because he needs x-rays etc etc.

Can't think of any reasons for trauma - unless he's been charging around the field enjoying the grass and not wearing a rug!

Thanks darling. Worried sick about him :(

YO is brilliant so if it was something straightforward she wouldn't say vet. It's got me very puzzled - he seemed fine on Saturday!

Now keep thinking that I rode him when he was lame and convincing myself I did. He honestly seemed OK!

Will text you when vet has been . . . xxx

It sounds like a situation that I was in a few years ago. The mare I had seem o/k hacking though started to get a bit short striding. She went to a trainer while I was on holiday, she did not like how she was on the lunge. got back lady first and back lady said mare was lame on 3 legs!! They were both correct and it seems like you trust your YO so it sounds like you will need the vet. I won't go in to more detail as every horse is different but good luck and update us when you get more news.
